apartments on a farm near Paganico, Grosseto, Tuscany West

When

18th August - 25th August 2007, 1 week

Location

Il Passo degli Ulivi is a single story building on a farm up a quiet road not far from the small town of Paganico. From the veranda of the accommodation, across the valley, can be seen the small hilltop town of Civitella Marritima. The location is wonderfully quiet and rural, set near to farm buildings, but separated by a hedge to make it very private. The views are across rolling hills covered with Vineyards and Olive groves. All in all a very peaceful and attractive location.

Within an easy hours drive, or less, is the coast, Montalcino, Siena and Castel del Piano. The roads are mostly quiet, for driving, with the exception of the main road to Siena

Nearby Amenities

The nearest store is in Paginico, which is a 10 minute drive away. There is one restaurant on another farm, within walking distance and a couple of small restaurants can be found in Paginico. However, the we usually drove to Montalcino, S.Angelo in Colle or Grosseto to eat and also Siena one evening.

The House/Apartment

There are three apartments built in a single story building, using attractive traditional construction materials, with quite a lot of space and high ceilings. The apartments are very peaceful and are laid out in an L shape with a covered veranda. Each apartment has a table and chairs outside, next to the front door and the gardens fall away in front of you, providing a lovely view, of the gardens and countryside.

Garden

To one side of the apartment building and down a few steps, is an area laid out with a further three tables and chairs, which is paved and has shade, etc. This is great to sit and have breakfast, as it catches the first of the sun. The gardens are nicely maintained with lawns dotted with young olive trees, flower beds and pots.

Down a few steps further from the sitting area, is the pool of 12m, which is laid out with loungers and brollies to provide a very relaxing area for serious sunbathing and swimming.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was very clean, well laid out and very pleasant.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

We found the beds to be very comfortable, including the sofa bed in the main room.

The bathroom was ideal, well furnished, clean, with copious hot water in the shower. It was very well decorated and had all the facilities.

Kitchen

The kitchen area is well laid out. The pots and pans were hardly used and of good quality. There is crockery, glasses, cutlery and cooking utensils, all of nice design and in good condition, for six people.

The is a fridge freezer, four-ring gas cooker (i.e., stove) and microwave, in other words all you need to cook a proper meal.

An iron and iron board is also supplied, which I think we used one evening.

Problems or Bonuses

The surprise was the general quality of all the apartments and fixtures and fittings.

I would say that the apartment could benefit from one small chest of drawers.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked by email and were treated well, in a friendly and efficiently manner, by the person organising the booking.

The on site person, Antonella, was very friendly and keen to look after us. Her English is better than she thinks and so language wasn't a problem.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would recommend Il Passo degli Ulivi to anyone. I thought that it represented good value and became our base for a lovely holiday. It might be too quiet for some, but if you are happy to drive then there is a lot to do and see in the area, with the beach not too far off.

Things to do in this area

We loved Montalcino and S.Angelo in Colle. We can recommend the leather shops in Montalcino and the restaurants, but we particular liked the main restaurant in S.Angelo in Colle. Grosseto doesn't get a very good press as a small industrial town, but go to the centre and there is a walled town, with attractive old buildings, shops and restaurants.
