5bed/4bath house near Spoleto, Umbria WhenSeptember 2007, 2 weeks LocationThe location of Il Monastero was perfect. It was about 15 minutes from Spoleto, in the country-side, surrounded by olive farms ... beautiful, beautiful. Located in a tiny hamlet, Silvignano, on a mountain. The view was absolutely amazing looking out over the valley. Take the virtual tour at the bottom of the page on the website and remember - it is so much better than even these pictures show. Nearby AmenitiesRental car is a must, although there is a bus stop close by with am/pm service into Spoleto and other nearby towns. However, on specific days of the week, a truck loaded with beautiful vegetables, or fruit would come into town and the locals would buy what they needed. There is a restaurant within walking distance down the hill (Casalina), and another - La Poreta (in a castle and church) nearby ... short drive. The House/ApartmentIl Monasatero is a restored monastery - parts of it date back to the 12th century, with the remainder being 14th century. The owners have done an amazing job restoring it and furnishing it beautifully. I just can't say enough about how lovely it was inside - and furnished with top of the line beds, bedding ... everything. You can tell that this was a labor of love. GardenOh yeah - the terrace is huge with sweeping views to the valley ... wisteria vines, all kinds of potted trees, etc. Simply amazing. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasEverything was in immaculate condition. There are many antique pieces of furniture, and many old Italian lamps, tables, etc. There were more than enough chairs, the house was immaculately clean. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds/mattresses were very comfortable. The bedrooms were all beautifully done. KitchenThe kitchen is great. We cooked a lot there. Everything was high quality. Problems or BonusesWe were surprised at how gorgeous and big the property was. The pictures don't do it justice. A lot of times you look at pictures and then you get there and the property doesn't look nearly as big or nice ... this was NOT the case. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owners were so nice - wonderful to do business with. Very patient with all my questions. The guy that manages the property for the owners was a joy to work with and speaks excellent English, French and Italian. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Oh yeah - I would so stay here again. I would recommend this property to anyone without hesitation. Things to do in this areaOh gosh ... let's see. Spoleto, of course, is the closest town. Assisi, Perugia, Deruta, Trevi, Spello, Orvieto are all close. Cortona is definitely a do-able day-trip. Florence is 2+ hours by car, Rome is 1 1/2 hours by car. Le Marche is just over the mountain, so the Adriatic coast is within an hour's drive.
