Review 3155: San Potente, Villa Rosy
apartments in converted farm house near Assisi, Umbria
July 2007, one week
We had a fabulous time at Villa Rosy. Full disclosure: we won this week as a prize in the 2006 SlowTrav contest. However, I can say without hesitation that Villa Rosy is worth what you pay for it, we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again! Our wonderful experience began even before we arrived, as the owner, our hostess Corinna, was lovely to deal with, easy to communicate with, and helpful in every way.
The details of the villa are accurately covered in the previous reviews here, so I won't repeat the basics. On arrival, we were greeted with a lovely basket of goodies including a bottle of local wine, jam, San Potente olive oil, and delicious home-baked tarts/cakes (Corinna's mom should open a bakery!) Corinna and her family were around in the mornings, working on the farm and in the olive groves, but completely unobtrusive. The villa itself is spacious and comfortable, with comfortable beds, and room enough for everyone to have privacy. Each bedroom has its own private bath. The kitchen is well-equipped, although we only had breakfast there. We were three couples and a single (one couple stayed in the separate apartment.) Each floor has its own key and entrance so folks could come and go without disturbing those sleeping on other floors. The only caveat is that the main living room is open to the master bedroom and bath on the top floor, so that makes it a little difficult for hanging out in the living room.
As it happened, we were there during an unusually hot period, so we didn't spend much time inside the house at all. If I had one suggestion to make to the owner it would be to provide fans in the bedrooms -- that would have made a tremendous difference during the hot summer. The pool was fantastic and we practically lived in it when we weren't touring! The pool lights were on till midnight or so and we swam every evening after dinner. The patio above the pool was covered and a lovely, cooler spot to sit and have an afternoon snack or just relax. We walked the olive groves in the early mornings looking for birds and saw the beautiful Upupa (Hoopoe).
Of course, the location is perfect for visiting Assisi, Perugia, Spello, the Val d'umbra, and we also did day trips further afield to Norcia and the Piano Grande, and Spoleto. Spello is really the closest town for dinner and we found two great restaurants there, Il Molino and La Cantina de Spello, as well as a great wine bar, Enoteca Properzio.
Finally, I should add that Corinna and her extended family catered a large party for us, a SlowTrav get-together, held on the poolside patio. She provided a tremendous amount of fantastic home-cooked food, as well as linens, glassware, plates, chairs, etc; all for a very reasonable price. I'd definitely recommend Villa Rosy for weddings and other events. In fact ... I am thinking about a special birthday party there myself...!
