1bed/1bath apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice

When

May 2007, 2 weeks

Location

In the Dorsoduro, the Ca Rezonico vaporetto stop is at the end of the calle.

Nearby Amenities

This apartment is pretty close to everything.

The House/Apartment

There are three apartments in this building. We rented the first floor apartment that was supposed to have been fully renovated. However, when we entered the apartment, it smelt musty although the windows were open. The apartment did not feel very clean nor did it look renovated.

Garden

This apartment has a small balcony that looks out to the garden. The garden was only accessible from the ground floor apartment. You can also see the neighbor's garden and the bell tower of the church nearby.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture were just okay but the apartment could use a good cleaning and some real renovation.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bathroom is okay with a tub and shower head and shower curtain. There was good water pressure in the bathroom.

The bedroom was acceptable to start with. The mosquito netting came in real handy. There is a double bed plus a twin bed. We used the twin bed for clothes.

One morning towards the end of the first week, we discovered some dark stuff on the twin bed. (Our clothes came off real quick!!!) The stuff turned out to be saw dust (and whatever) from flying ants eating the ceiling beams. The owner's friend, who manages the apartment, came over and sprayed the areas where the stuff was coming from. But it didn't help much. We continued to find stuff on the twin bed plus dead and dying ants. I am just glad that no one was using that bed. It would have really freaked me out.

There are also areas on the walls that needed patching - exposed bricks or wood that shouldn't have been.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the worst part of the apartment. The utensils, dishes etc. were old and some looked cruddy. My husband even suggested that we purchase new flatware.

The kitchen also smelt musty. There was very little water pressure and no hot water at all. The "friend" even suggested that we do dishes in the bathroom (huh?!?!) and that it has been a problem.

It was pretty bad.

Problems or Bonuses

The owner, who lives in San Francisco, was very nice and so I expected the apartment to be in good shape. Wrong. Someone made a comment that I may have expected too much since Venice is old. But I don't think so, we have stayed in rentals that are centuries old with no problems.

What a complete contrast to the beautiful apartment in Assisi.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner was very nice. She told me that they thought that the flying ants problem was solved three years ago. She also said that she will tell prospective renters about the water problems in the kitchen.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

No, I would never recommend this vacation rental.

Things to do in this area

Lot's of things to do in Venice. In fact, we are returning to Venice for five weeks over the Christmas holiday! Definitely to a different apartment!
