Review 32: Umbria Rentals, Panicale Farmhouse
2bed/2bath apartment in farmhouse near Panicale, Umbria
September 1999, 2 weeks
We plan to stay there again. We rented the Panicale Farmhouse for 2 weeks in September 1999 and loved it. The farmhouse is about a 15 minute walk (footpath and quiet road) from the town of Panicale. It is in a private and secluded location on the side of a hill looking out to Panicale and the valley south of Panicale. The farmhouse is divided into two apartments: Gun Cesarini, the owner of the farmhouse and the Panicale apartments, lives on the bottom floor, the apartment to rent is on the upper floor. Since the farmhouse is built into the side of the hill, the upper floor apartment is like being on the ground floor.
From the parking area outside the house, you walk up a flight of stairs to the porch. From here you enter the apartment through glass french doors. The porch overlooks the driveway and the apartment below, but is really very private because of how it is situated. It has a table for eating meals outside and some lounging chairs. The view from the house and the porch is spectacular.
The apartment is quite large - maybe 1000 square feet. It has a large living room and kitchen/dining room. These both have big windows that look out onto the porch, as well as windows on the other walls. The kitchen is quite usable. There is a 4 burner gas stove, a half-size fridge (the usual in Italy), a washing machine. No oven. The only problem with the kitchen and living rooms is a lack of lights (but this too is usual in Italy where electricity is very expensive). I had to be sure to have dinner prepared before dark.
There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. You have to walk through the bedroom with two singles to get to the double bedroom. The double bedroom is fantastic. Beautifully furnished with windows on two walls. You could open them up and have the most beautiful breeze blow over you while sleeping. The views are also wonderful. But, the bathroom.... the sink and toilet are fine, but the shower is so small it is almost unusable. We never did use it. I think you would have to stand on the toilet to use the shower. Instead we used an outdoor shower they have beside the garden area. It was very nice.
Also, there is a trap door on the floor of the twin bedroom that leads to the office of the apartment below and you could hear the telephone ringing, any telephone conversations, and the fax machine. If you close the door to the double bedroom, you do not hear it from this room, but you would hear it from the twin bedroom.
Being able to walk into Panicale is a delight. The walk is easy and beautiful. The town is great. There are always a few visitors around, but it feels like a real town, not just a tourist destination. Gallo who runs the caffe is very nice and the coffee is excellent. There are a couple of good restaurants in town. There are a few good food stores, a bakery and a bank. This is a good location for seeing the Lake Trasimeno area and southern Umbria and southern Tuscany.
