Review 321: Le Miccine, Le Miccine

Review by Jill from OH

apartment in Chianti, Tuscany Chianti

June 2002, 1 week

Le Miccine is conveniently located on the chiantigiana about 5 minutes from the town of Gaiole. I was a bit nervous as we booked our accommodations based solely on the property's website. All reservations were laid to rest as we drove up the cypress-lined drive to our home set beautifully among the vineyards.

Le Miccine is a working vineyard that produces wonderful wine, grappa, and olive oil. The property was once a way station for weary travellers and their animals en route between Siena and Florence. Le Miccine's owners happen to be fellow Americans, who have managed to attend to every comfort you can think of.

We stayed in the owner's apartment located on the second floor overlooking the gorgeous hills. The apartment was beautifully appointed, with two wonderful bedrooms. The master suite has a queen-size bed equipped with canopy netting for the evenings and a huge attached bathroom with a gorgeous Italian tiled shower. The second bedroom had two twin beds and a bathroom adjacent, also complete with a good sized walk-in shower. The apartment has a huge living room and dining with an enormous fireplace and a farm table large enough to accomodate a "big night" feast. The kitchen, while small, was perfectly suited to cooking all meals and came equipped with everything you could imagine.

The rooms were furnished with beautiful antiques and linens, making our stay all the more special since it was our honeymoon! The owners have amassed quite a library. There was an extensive number of travel books for Tuscany and Italy, as well as travel narratives and cookbooks (and I was worried about not bringing a good book, hah!). One very thoughtful touch was the guide they assembled, with everything you could ever want to know to make your holiday more enjoyable, from recommended restaurants, to door-to-door driving directions to major cities that took you right to a free parking lot!

The house was amazing, but I think my favorite part was having the amazing swimming pool at our leisure! We would return from a day of sightseeing around 3:00, exhausted and hot (it was in the 90's when we were there), and there was truly nothing better than diving into that pool and looking out over the incredible hills! And did I mention the landscaping?! When we arrived I was overwhelmed by a light sweet fragrance. I also noticed it when we went to dinner in town that evening. The groundskeeper explained that it was the Linden trees. They had just come into their peak and gave off an incredible scent, somewhat like lily of the valley. As you walked up the terraced steps to the pool, the owners had carefully labeled each species of foliage/plant so you could take note of what surrounded you. I have never seen rosemary that huge, they were the size of most evergreen shrubs here in Ohio!

From our base here we were able to take day trips to Montalcino, Florence, Castellina, Radda, Lucca, and Siena. It was perfect!
