Review 3222: Venice Rentals, Santa Sofia Apartment

Review by MichaelG from Canada

3bed/2bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

November 6-10, 2007, 4 nights

This apartment overlooks Campo Santa Sofia on the Grand Canal, steps from the traghetto crossing to the Rialto Markets. It occupies the top floor of a four story building, with large windows opening over the Campo. Our family of four, with children ages 11 and 13, absolutely loved this area of Cannaregio.

Nearby Amenities

We found this to be a very convenient location, being just metres from a pleasant section of the Strada Nova. Bakeries, cheese and meat shops, cafes, and a Billa grocery store are in the immediate surroundings.

The area also contains many good and reasonably priced restaurants. A couple that we enjoyed (having found them, I think, in the superb "Chow Venice" guidebook) were "La Perla" and "Alberto."

This being Venice, everything was within easy (and delightful) walking distance. San Marco 10-15 minutes (depending on inevitable detours), Accademia ditto, Rialto markets a 30 second crossing of the Grand Canal by traghetto.

The House/Apartment

Although not certain of the age of the building, it is certainly historical, and in very good condition. Massive ground level doors, with steps all the way to the top for this apartment. Those with mobility issues might find this difficult.

I believe the building contains three other apartments, each occupying an entire floor.

The apartment itself has clearly been thoroughly renovated in recent years. Kitchen and both bathrooms are modern and complete. One bathroom has a tub, the other a shower stall. There is a dishwasher, and all the cookware, glassware, etc that one would need.

There is a very comfortable living/dining room, with sofa, armchairs, and a long dining table. Excellent and versatile lighting. Twelve foot ceilings and large windows.

We used the central heating, and this was reliable and effective. The apartment has air conditioning for the warmer months.

There is a little bit of "pedestrian noise", but this was not at all a problem. The bedrooms are, in any case, located in the back of the apartment away from the campo/Strada Nova.

The apartment has two terraces, overlooking inner courtyards. The larger one has table and chairs. Lovely spot for morning espresso on crisp November mornings!

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Absolutely everything was in superb condition and extremely comfortable. I believe that the owners use this apartment as their own vacation property, and not simply a source of income. There is a well stocked "library", with multiple guidebooks, historical works, and Venice-themed fiction.

I would describe the property as " sparkling clean."

The bedrooms were spacious (at least the two that we used; the third would presumably be opened for larger groups) and comfortable. High quality mattresses, quite soft, with lots of extra pillows and blankets. Plenty of storage ... bureaus and cabinets.

Bathrooms modern. One large with a deep tub (which our daughter really enjoyed in order to try out all the fun bath products from the fabulous store down the street). The smaller bathroom has a shower stall.

Dishwasher, gas range, oven. Well equipped. We prepared breakfast each day, and one full dinner with ingredients purchased across the canal at the Rialto markets.

Problems or Bonuses

Our entire stay here was a pleasant surprise.

We had originally booked a different apartment with Venice Rentals, four months before our trip. Several days before departure, we received word that, because of a broken water heater, our original booking was not available and several alternatives were offered.

We chose this option based on location and photos, but in my opinion the actual experience of the apartment was better than anticipated ... I don't think the pictures really capture how pleasant a space it really is.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I don't think it is ever easy when one's original plans are changed just prior to departure. However, Denise and Maurizio at Venice Rentals were prompt and thorough in suggesting and arranging alternatives. The on site staff member who checked us in and out of the apartment was a very pleasant young man from the US. We found everyone to be pleasant and professional.

As a result of the last minute problems, the price of this property was discounted from its regular 375 per night to 225 .

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would recommend this to our best friends. A lovely property in a delightful and convenient neighbourhood in Venice. The only qualification would be the need to be comfortable with climbing many steps to the uppermost floor.
