Review 3270: Florence and Tuscany, Zini Apartment

Review by travelling knitter from WA

1bed/1bath apartment near Duomo, Florence

December, 2007, 12 days

The apartment is about a 10 minute walk to the Duomo -- it is in an apartment building at the corner of Via della Pergola and Via della Colonna. It is on the second floor (first floor in Italy). The front doors of the building face Via della Pergola. It is a busy street but there is no street noise. It has a small deck off the kitchen.

Nearby Amenities

There is a small grocery store less than five minutes (turn right when leaving the apartment building and turn right at first intersection - store is on the right). Large grocery store (Standa) is in Piazza Salvemini - about 10 minute walk. There are several Internet points nearby, including an Internet Train (with American keyboards). There is also a fabulous yarn shop -- Campolmi Roberto Filati -- less that five minutes away. There are also lots of other little shops along the nearby streets.

On the rain days, we used the bus stop just around the corner on Via della Colonna.

The House/Apartment

The building and apartment were well maintained. The kitchen area is separated from the living areas of the apartment by the entry way at the front door. There are quite a few vacation apartment rentals in the building.

You can view the apartment directly: Zini Apartment.

The deck is really too small to sit on.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was clean and everything was in good condition.

SAT-TV with BBC World News but no BBC Prime or CNN.

No Internet connection. Some agencies (ours included) advertise this apt as having DSL, but it doesn't. The owner's assistant is working to correct this.

A good selection of travel info related to the area.

Steam heat radiators that we could control with a thermostat. The apartment was comfortable temperature-wise.

Lighting: good, plenty of light for reading (and knitting). Only one window in living room and one window in bedroom. Not much exterior light coming in in the living room and bedroom, however the kitchen area is very bright with lots of windows. Many apartments in the building and has a shared laundry room with two washing machines. The machines were straight forward and the owner's assistant was quick to answer any questions about their use.

The bathroom was good and the shower was good -- plenty of hot water. The hair dryer was strange (looked like a vacuum cleaner hose and only put out cool air) so I used my own. Plenty of towels and clean ones were provided while we were there. No face cloths.

The bedroom was large with plenty of storage but the mattress was very firm. Plenty of pillows.

Has an American coffee pot, real oven, gas cook-top and good sized refrigerator. The owner's assistant was quick to get us other things we wanted for the kitchen, such as a large mixing bowl and a teapot. The kitchen was well equipped and had the basic ingredients such as olive oil, salt, pepper, etc. We had to use our own coffee filters, but we had brought some from home. There is a breakfast area in the kitchen and a dining table in the living room. It was easy to prepare meals.

Problems or Bonuses

The lack of DSL was a surprise as the rental agent had confirmed three times that the apt had DSL, I specially emailed her about DSL. However, there was an Internet Train not far away and we used that. There is another Internet point about two minutes away but it was more expensive and they freaked at the sight of my PDA and didn't really understand that I could hook it up just like a laptop.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner's assistant was terrific, excellent English, quick to answer questions. There is a phone in the apartment so you can call her if you need anything.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would recommend it to others. While on a busy street it was nice and quiet. The shops were convenient and was the mass transit plus it was a walkable distance to the center.

Things to do in this area

It was an easy walk to the center of Florence and when it rained or was really cold (we were there is December), we hopped on a bus. We bought multi-day bus passes and used the buses extensively.
