Review 3279: Guest in Italy, Croc Apartment (140)

Review by travelling knitter from WA

1bed/1bath apartment near Spanish Steps, Rome

Dec, 2007, 12 days

The apartment is located at Via della Croce N 20, just a block from the Spanish Steps and less than five minutes the metro station. It was the perfect location for us. It is on the second floor (with a small lift) facing the street. We spent 12 nights in the apartment.

Nearby Amenities

There was a totally awesome salsamenteria downstairs on the left and a decent gelateria on the right. There a decent size mercato about a block and a half away (turn left when you leave the apartment and then right at the corner - when the street ends you are at the mercato) plus a small "farmer's market" each morning by the mercato. We bought wonderful fresh ravioli at the salsamenteria plus a ricotta pesto that was awesome.

The House/Apartment

There is a lot of street noise because there is so much foot traffic on the street below. The trash guys come through at 1am each day to collect the trash (think glass breaking noise). Once the trash guys go through it's quite quiet until about 7am when the shop owners arrive. The double windows do help cut the noise, but we had the windows open a lot. Even though we were there in December, it was warm in the apartment (for us) and we needed the windows open. We didn't hear any noise from the other apartments.

The apartment was well maintained. The owner was very responsive when we had a small leak develop in the bathroom and she had it fixed within a few hours.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment was well furnished. Two sofas hide-a-beds in the living room plus a table and chairs. There was also a very small eating area in the kitchen. What you see in the photos on the website, is what you get.

For me the bed was hard, but my husband liked it. Lots of storage and closet space. The bathroom was fine but has a small shower door. The hot water can be temperamental - switching from just right to boiling or cold. The TV is in the bedroom (the remote turns on when you press a number key, the power button only turns the TV off).

The washer is a Candy and the SlowTrav instructions, How to Use an Italian Washing Machine, worked perfectly. The kitchen has a gas range, a dishwasher, refrigerator and a funny little oven. The kitchen is quite adequate for fixing breakfast and evening meals.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was terrific. The on site person didn't speak a lot of English, however, when I called the owner about the leak, there was someone who spoke English. Between my bad Italian and their English, we were able to communicate.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

The best thing about this apartment for us was the location and the size. We would stay here again and recommend this apartment to anyone who wasn't bothered by street noise. My husband enjoyed the street noise and the activity of the neighborhood.

Things to do in this area

This apartment is all about location, location, location. We were just minutes from everything we wanted to see, either via the Metro, bus or on foot. And in the Spanish Steps neighborhood, the window shopping is fabulous!
