Review 3287: Drawbridge to Europe, Il Palagio - Tottolo (#541)

Review by M and C from NE

Apartments on an estate near Panzano, Tuscany Chianti

Oct. 2007, 1 week

Il Palagio was on the top of a hill in the Tuscan countryside. The views from the estate were spectacular. Since the property was a working farm, we saw olive groves and vineyards and even had a tour of the winery from the owner, Monia. She explained how the award winning olive oil was made, too. The grounds were immaculately maintained. The location was private, yet we were able to walk into the town of Panzano. It was a little bit of a hike, but the views of the countryside were worth it. We bought groceries in town and cooked our dinner at the villa. We loved the area.

Nearby Amenities

Because the weather was unseasonably chilly, we drove most everywhere. We could walk into the town of Panzano, but we drove to the other little villages nearby. Panzano had a grocery, a few restaurants and enotecas and some shopping. We also bought groceries in Greve, which was a short drive. Greve has a wonderful butcher shop.

The House/Apartment

Il Palagio dates back to the 10th century. It was in wonderful shape. Our apartment was modern with very comfortable beds and bathrooms, but the stone walls and stone and wooden beams in the ceiling made it easy to imagine how living during ancient times might be. We used the fireplace some and the kitchen was well equipped. Our apartment was one of six apartments in the house, I think. It was peaceful and quiet. Our apartment was large with a three bedrooms, two baths, kitchen and very large dining and living area.

You can view the apartment directly: Il Palagio - Tottolo.

There were several outside sitting areas outside the house. Our apartment opened to an entry courtyard on one side which was shared and we also had a little private area on the other side of our apartment by the pool. We ate dinner one night in a cozy area where the BBQ grill was. As I said before, the views were fantastic from every location.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape. Very comfortable. Very clean. Plenty of chairs in the living room, dining room and kitchen.

The beds were very comfortable and very pretty in all rooms. One bedroom was extremely large. One was smaller. The third was down some stone steps. It was so charming with arched stone ceilings and had so much character. One bathroom was large with two vanities and jacuzzi. The other bathroom was smaller and had the washer and dryer in the bathroom. It was a little crowded, but functional. The showers were very nice. Everything worked very well - hot water and pressure were good.

We used the kitchen to make full meals on three nights. We also made large breakfasts almost every day. The pots and pans were fine and the dishes were of good quality. There were enough serving dishes and silverware. We loved cooking in our Italian kitchen.

Problems or Bonuses

We were surprised at the beauty of the countryside. We were surprised that it was so hilly. Be prepared to drive on the winding, hilly roads. We were surprised at how we loved our villa. It was amazing with the feel of medieval times, yet so comfortable.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Excellent service. On site person was very helpful. I called and emailed several times with questions and she was patient and helpful. She spoke English. The description and pictures of Il Palagio was accurate. We will use Drawbridge to Europe again.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I would recommend Il Palagio - Tottolo to my best friend. I would love to go back for another week soon.

Things to do in this area

Favorite restaurant was Lamole. Favorite place to shop was San Gimignano pottery shops. We loved the many villages nearby. Florence and Siena were great.
