Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 3289: Grifoglia, Apartment
apartments on a farm near Barga, north of Lucca, Tuscany North
October 13-20, 2007, 1 week
Grifoglia is a farm in the countryside near Barga. The views from the property which overlook the Apennine Mountains are quite spectacular. Our apartment was in a recently renovated stone barn on the property adjacent to the main house.
The nearest grocery store was in Barga (about 20 minutes drive). However we generally did not shop there as they were closed from noon until about 4pm. We preferred to drive over to Gallicano (15 minutes further on) where there was a LeCleric store which was a mega supermarket that stays open all day seven days a week and the selection and prices were much better.
The apartment was in an old stone barn that had been recently renovated. It was on two stories with the kitchenette, living room downstairs and the bedroom and bathroom upstairs. In the main house there were two other rental apartments.
The grounds were beautifully kept and the host had a lovely garden that could be accessed for fresh vegetables as needed. The apartment had a private sitting area and there was a shared pool.
The furniture was in good shape and adequate although the sofa could have been more comfortable and lighting better positioned for reading.
The bedroom was of good size and the bed very comfortable. The bathroom contained only a shower which at times was a little awkward to use and we would have preferred a bath.
The kitchen was adequate although we could have benefited from a better selection of cooking utensils and a few more dishes and knives and forks. We were able to cook full meals every day but would liked to have had an oven.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We fully enjoyed our stay at Grifoglia and found our hosts very friendly and accommodating. We would not hesitate to return and would recommend it to any of our friends.
Things to do in this area
The most enjoyable part of our stay war the excellent hiking in the area. We were provided with good hiking maps, which identified a number of interesting and challenging hikes of 2-6 hours duration. We found the trails to be well marked and maintained. The drive over the mountains from Castelnuovo to Massa on our way to the Cinque Terre was also spectacular and memorable.
