2bed/2bath apartment near Campo dei Fiori, Rome

When

October 8 - 13, 2007, 5 nights

Location

The location of our Dolce Roma apartment in Campo dei Fiori could not have been better. In the heart of the old city, it was an easy walk to Vatican City, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon.

Nearby Amenities

There was an excellent grocery store literally "around the corner," where we bought all the necessities including excellent Italian wines at very good prices. Many restaurants were near by, but our favorite was Antica Trattoria Polese just a few steps from the apartment. Although we tried other restaurants that were more highly rated, we found this neighborhood place and its people perfect. So much so that we dined there three nights out of five. Dominico was our waiter each time, and he was wonderful! By the third night, he greeted us like friends.

The House/Apartment

The building is centuries old but incredibly comfortable. There are at least two other units in the building, but we never met our neighbors. Although in the heart of the old city, and a fascinating neighborhood, the apartment was a quiet oasis. A living room window opens into the entry stairway, and the roof over the stairway is open to the elements. I'll never forget the wonderful sound of rain on the stairs one night as we listened through the open window.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were lovely, and the apartment was spotless. The apartment has wonderful "character," making one feel very much like a temporary Roman while staying there. The apartment was the perfect size for our group of two couples.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were extremely comfortable, and offered both couples complete privacy. Having two bathrooms was ideal. The bathrooms and the shower stalls are small, of course, but quite large enough for the purpose.

Kitchen

The kitchen was fully functional and fully equipped, although we didn't cook. We used the refrigerator for breakfast, lunch and snack items, and we spent time at the kitchen table because it was a cozy place to be.

Problems or Bonuses

Every experience was a bit of a surprise because we had never spent time in "our own" apartment in a Roman neighborhood, but all of the surprises were amazingly good! Were it possible, we would have stayed much longer.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We were so fortunate to come across the reviews of Dolce Roma on the Slow Travel web site. It led us to one of the most magical vacation experiences this well-traveled couple, and friends, have ever had.

In October 2007, we spent five nights at the beautiful Campo dei Fiori apartment of Natalia and Walter in Rome. For several months before our stay, e-mail correspondence with Natalia had answered every question and addressed every detail to make our arrival and the following days easy and worry free. For two couples arriving at different hours, Natalia arranged a taxi to meet us and deliver us to our amazing haven perfectly located in the heart of the old city.

Natalia also met us when we arrived at the apartment. After reading the reviews on Slow Travel many times, spending hours looking at the photos and other information on the Dolce Roma web site, and corresponding with her via e-mail, I was so pleased to meet her. Everything about her lovely apartment was better than advertised, and as the week went by, she and Walter were the most charming, helpful, and gracious "hosts." On the final, sad day when we had to leave the apartment and go to the Port, Natalia arranged a van to take us to Civitavecchia.

The whole experience in the apartment was a memory the four of us will treasure for many years to come. It was perfect in every way, and we send our many thanks to Natalia and Walter.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would go back in a heartbeat! I have already recommended Dolce Roma to friends and a few strangers.

Things to do in this area

We really enjoyed our semi-private tours of the near-by and awesome sites of ancient and Renaissance Rome. We're so glad we decided to take all four tours with Context Rome. They do an amazing job, and most meeting places were within walking distance of the apartment.
