Review 3327: Owner, Piazza S.Egidio Apartment
1bed/1bath apartment in Trastevere, Rome
January 2008, 7 nights
Right on the Piazza S Egidio in the heart of the Trastevere - Rome of the Dolce Vita! Great for walking just about everywhere you might want to go, and no distance at all to dozens of little restaurants when your feet are killing you at the end of the day! You can watch the world go by from the sitting room window, but more likely you'll want to get down there and join in!
You can buy everything you need from tiny stores hidden away in the nearby streets and after two days you will be welcomed as an old friend. Like the café proprietor who on my third morning greeted me with a "the usual?" There is also a lovely little outdoor market. If there is a supermarket nearby I did not see it, nor did I miss it!
This is a typical old roman building with beamed ceilings, small windows, which keep out the heat in summer and cold in winter. The apartment is up two flights of stairs. Like all Latin countries, people linger late into the night at little tables in the piazza, and the hum of conversation rises up to the sitting room window. But the bedroom is at the back of the apartment and the only sound you can here is the chime of the bells of Santa Maria - to remind you that yes, you really ARE in Rome!
Join the throng in the cafés!
The apartment was impeccable, welcoming and comfortably furnished. Plenty of room for a couple of dinner guests either in the living room or the open plan kitchen.
Excellent firm double bed with pretty patchwork cover in a roomy bedroom, lots of storage space and a whole wall lined with English books of all descriptions. The building pre-dating in-house bathrooms by several hundred years, the shower-room was, of course, an after-thought! The apartment now boasts a shower, vanity unit and WC, nicely tiled and with unlimited hot water!
Well equipped and good size kitchen, but I never made more than a cup of tea - why cook when there is so much really good Italian food available cooked by someone else?!
Problems or Bonuses
The owner provided more bath towels than I could count, plus bathrobes!
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The English-speaking owner welcomed us and is enthusiastic and generous in sharing her knowledge of Rome. She is attentive to detail in the apartment.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I'd go back tomorrow - my only worry would be that someone else might have taken it first!
Things to do in this area
I cannot remember the names of the restaurants we went to, but would recommend anyone to do what I do - look at the menu and then at what is on people's plates! Also, remember that in Italy people start to eat around 9pm or so, so an empty restaurant at 8pm is not necessarily a bad omen.
