Review by Tom S from VA

4bed/3bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

Living Room of Palazzo Fontana, photo by Tom S

March 2008, one week

The Palazzo Fontana is located on the Grand Canal, and is on a small quiet calle. The entrance to the calle is gated, and very nice. The neighborhood is great, and there are good restaurants nearby.

Nearby Amenities

The pescheria fish market and vegetable market are very convenient (50 cent traghetto ride across the canal and three minute walk to the east) and there is a good grocery store a few minutes walk to the west from the apartment. The fish market was a lot of fun -- we got a lot of good seafood from the pescheria (its open in the morning, but closes around noon each day). There are several good restaurants a few minutes walk from the hotel -- we greatly enjoyed Vini da Gigio (need reservations).

The Ca'd'Oro Museum is two doors to the east, and the Ca' Pesaro Museum is diagonally across the canal -- we enjoyed both. Saint Marks was about a 12 minute walk. Vaporetto and water taxi stops were two minute walk from the house.

The House/Apartment

The structure was built in the 1600s. The apartment is huge -- around 4000 square feet, and it has all of the elegance of ancient times. It was the birthplace of Pope Clement XIII (we were there on his birthday, and had a nice celebration). There are three large frescoes of drawings of ancient ruins by Piranesi on the walls in the apartment. The floor designs and Murano glass chandeliers are better than the ones in the Doge's palace. There is a nice hidden bar on the west wall near the canal windows. The working library with hundreds of volumes was fascinating.

The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed, and the dish washer, clothes washer, dryer, and all equipment worked great. The heating system also did a good job, which was a pleasant surprise because with 20 foot ceilings in a centuries-old building, I was expecting it might be a bit cool during our early March visit, but the temperature was nice and constant. The apartment is on the second floor. There is an elevator. There is a good balcony over the canal.

There were no sounds from any neighboring apartments, but sounds of boats from the grand canal are part of the deal. We enjoyed the maritime action, and were not bothered by the boat sounds, but you will definitely hear the sounds of boats on the Grand Canal. Watching the boat traffic was very interesting -- there are hundreds of different kinds of vessels to see from the south-west facing balcony.

The apartment has a nice, large balcony over the Grand Canal. We used it for coffee in the mornings and drinks in the evenings, watching LOTS of boats of all types traveling in the canal.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

My extended family of six -- two grandparents, two parents, and two teenagers stayed for a week at the Palazzo Fontana on the Grand Canal in March. It was superb. The apartment was clean, huge, beautiful, well appointed, and very convenient. The furniture is nice -- antique tables with good carvings, and lots of comfortable sofa's and chairs. The furniture is antique. It has the old comfort, but is not new. Hard to describe, but I liked it. The dining room had a huge dining table with nice table cloth and silverware. The living room is huge -- it had two sitting areas plus a large table which we used for most meals.

The beds were comfortable. Plenty of bathrooms. Everything was clean. There was plenty of hot water.

The kitchen worked good. There were plenty of pots pans espresso makers, dishes, everything needed. We cooked all breakfasts and nearly all dinners, and enjoyed it. The kitchen is a bit small, but no problem. It is arranged nicely.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The folks at VeniceRentals.com - Denise and Maurizio, and Denise's brother Tom - were very helpful and friendly, and made us feel welcome. They provided the information we needed, met us upon arrival, and gave us good advice. There were no surprise fees, and everything worked out as good or better than promised. These are good folks to work with.

We loved our stay at this apartment, and greatly appreciated the good advice and honest practices of Maurizio, Denise, and Tom at Venicerentals.com.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Things to do in this area

We walked everywhere in Venice, and had a great time. There are too many things to list, but I recommend getting a good map! I liked the map at the following link ---
