Review 3402: Owner, Apartment Garibaldi
2bed/2bath apartment in Lucca, Tuscany North
July 2007, 1 week
The apartment was located on Corso Garibaldi, just inside the walls of Lucca; there was a great view of the top of the wall from the apartment windows. It was a short walk from the train station and very close to Duomo San Martino.
Everything was within walking distance. There were restaurants, gelaterias, and small food stores within a few blocks of the apartment. The closest supermarket was about a 10 to 15 minute walk away. There was no need for a car at all.
The apartment was on the top floor of a well-maintained building containing six apartments. There were a lot of stairs to climb. The apartment was very nicely laid out and was extremely comfortable for the four of us. It was quite light and airy. There were screens on all the windows (a big plus!), and there was often a pleasant breeze; we didn't end up using the air conditioning at all. Because of its location on a main street in the city center, there was a fair amount of street noise at times.
The only outdoor space was a covered drying porch; there was no garden, terrace, or pool. However, within a minute or two you could be on top of the city walls enjoying the breeze.
The furniture was comfortable and in excellent condition. There was seating in the living room for about six. The dining room table had six chairs around it but seated only four comfortably as the space was rather narrow. The apartment was perfect for four people. Everything was sparkling clean.
The apartment had two double bedrooms and two compact full baths (shower only). The master bedroom had an en suite bathroom. The second bedroom was smaller and had a small bathroom next to it. The beds were quite comfortable. There was also a sofa bed in the living room, so the apartment could sleep up to six people.
The kitchen was modern and convenient to cook in, and we cooked quite a few full meals in the course of the week. Pots, pans, dishes, and utensils were more than adequate for our needs.
Problems or Bonuses
There were no problems -- only bonuses! The apartment was much nicer than we could tell from the description and photos on the website. The owner has clearly put a lot of care and expense into decorating and renovating the place. Amenities that we haven't found in most of our other rentals included window screens, air conditioning, washer, drier, dishwasher, telephone, and satellite TV.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We rented directly from the owner, who lives in London. She was easy to deal with and responded fully and promptly to all our questions. We were met on arrival by a local manager who spoke excellent English and was available by phone if we had any problems (we didn't). The owner also called once to check that we were settled in. Despite the fees involved in paying by bank transfer, the rental was an excellent value.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would happily stay at the apartment again and recommend it enthusiastically! The only caveat is that you must be able and willing to climb stairs.
Things to do in this area
We had stayed in Lucca before and enjoyed reacquainting ourselves with the town. We took two day trips during our stay to the nearby hill town of Barga (by bus) and to Cinque Terre (by train).
