Review 3462: Owner, Lucca Centre Apartment

Review by nordictraveler from Sweden

2bed/1bath apartment in Lucca, Tuscany North

April 2008, 7 days

My wife and I were looking for an apartment inside the walls of Lucca with a garden or balcony for outdoor light and sunshine and found it on the 'travel library' website (we cross checked the apartment on other websites).

The 'Lucca Center Apartment' sounded amazing, promising a 'quiet and bright' experience just inside the walls. It was just inside the walls and it had nice light, especially in the kitchen in the morning which, for us, was the most cozy part of the apartment, but it was definitely not quiet. If you are a light sleeper this is not the place for you. (maybe the tiny back bedroom could work, but not the master). The picture on the website shows that the street in front of the apartment is devoid of cars, we found this to never be the case as it's actually located on the corner of two 'major' roads (by Lucca standards). Buses, supply trucks, cars, and mopeds zoom by all day and into the night and we were awakened very early in the morning by heavy traffic, daily. The master bedroom stone wall is less than a meter off the main road (careful when you step outside!) and the glass window is quite thin-paned.

The apartment is on the edge of the city, but a quick 30-second walk puts you right up on the wall, and the five or ten minute walk into town and its piazzas was no problem, we thought the location was good (also near one bakery and a tiny store that sells produce, owned by a wonderful middle-aged Italian man who was very amused at our attempts to buy flat-leafed parsley from him.... he ended up giving it to us for free after we drew it in the air with our fingers). The beds were actually two cots pushed together in each room, and the master bedroom 'King' bed had a valley-gap between the mattresses. It reminded of sleeping on a rough cot years ago while at university, except the university one was more comfortable. The garden was as advertised, spacious, light, wonderful, and if you're traveling in the hot months (June, July, August) it may make up for the poor beds and extreme noise in the morning. If it's cold and rainy, the garden, surrounded by a stone wall, will be too cold to sit in and thus seldom used.

Daniela, the owner, is a completely sweet woman who picked us up from the train station (which is only a five to seven minute walk away depending on your mobility). She was lovely so I hope she reads this at some point because if she decides to put real mattresses in her bedrooms and double/triple/quadruple panes the master bedroom window, this apartment would be amazing. Really amazing. (It seems an easy fix.) But as it stands now, we would not return to it.

You can view the apartment directly: Lucca City Center Apartment.
