Studio apartment in Dorsoduro, Venice

When

October 18-25, 2007, 1 week

Location

This studio apartment is on the top floor (two flights up) of a building on the Calle Lunga de San Barnaba just off the Campo San Barnaba in the Dorsoduro district of Venice. The location is very convenient to the vaporetto (Ca Rezzonico stop on the Grand Canal) and walkable to almost everywhere. It's also very quiet, and not particularly crowded part of the city.

Nearby Amenities

The street has many shops and restaurants, and the Campo San Barnaba and Campo San ta Margherita are filled with cafes etc. Everything necessary is very close by. There is even a Billa grocery store on the nearby Zattere and another large grocery store in the Campo Santa Margherita.

The House/Apartment

The building is a bit run-down, but the flat itself is very nice -- obviously renovated within the last decade to a very high standard. The owner is British and the flat is very well designed for English-speaking visitors. The apartment consists of a large studio with sitting and sleeping areas, a nice kitchen, and a well-designed bathroom (with a washing machine) -- no shower, but a nice bathtub and the usual attachments. The space is nice. The only problem is its historical accuracy... there are beams on floor and ceiling that were the cause of many stubbed toes and bumped heads -- it takes some getting used to moving around in this space without injury, but it's worth it!

You can view the property directly: Altana v121.

Garden

One of the main features of this apartment is the altana (hence the name). It's a roof deck with wonderful views of the neighboring houses and streets, and nearby church spires. The space is truly wonderful in fine weather, and although not very private it was very beautiful. For adults only, however.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was of very high quality, and the bed was very comfortable. There is no coffee table and the furniture coverings are white, so some caution is advisable, but this isn't really a problem. There is a CD player, a TV, a library, and plenty of lamps so spending time here in the evenings is fine. The dining room and kitchen are combined, but this was a fine arrangement for two people. The place was immaculately clean.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bathroom is conventional -- a large, nice bathtub but no shower. The bed is in the studio but somewhat separated from the sitting area and very comfortable.

Kitchen

The kitchen is small but quite functional -- nice cooker and oven, fridge, plenty of pots and plates and utensils. There is a moka and kettle but no teapot to speak of (a minor detail). We cooked in several times and enjoyed it.

Problems or Bonuses

The place is full of little posters warning guests about the hostile neighbors (i.e make no noise, spill no water) but this never manifested itself during our visit -- the only neighbors we saw were very friendly. Other than that, and the bodily injuries caused by tripping over floor beams or bumping into ceiling beams, this place is absolutely wonderful.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was a pleasure to deal with and the local contact was both very friendly and and excellent English speaker. Even the cleaner we dealt with on the way out was nice and very accommodating. All-in-all, a very positive experience.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Absolutely recommend. We had a great time in this flat. The space is small and if you're clumsy you may suffer, but we loved it and would stay there again. The altana (roof deck) was really nice, and the location and convenience of this place really made our visit simple.

Things to do in this area

What can I say? It's Venice. Everything was walking distance. The Accademia is 10 minutes away, and the Rialto market 15. The vaporetto is five minutes away, and from there you can get anywhere. The restaurants in the neighborhood were good, and we could get to any other restaurant in half an hour. La Fenice is also less than 30 minutes away. This place is central.
