Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 3499: Drawbridge to Europe, Villa Il Cedro (#1833)
5bed/5bath house near Buonconvento, Tuscany South
12-19 April 2008, 7 days
Villa Il Cedro is 3 kilometers north of Buonconvento, accessed off the main highway between Buonconvento and Siena. Given the expanse of the estate and the villa, no noise of the highway is observed. Location was quite convenient for day trips to vineyards and Tuscan hill towns, being about halfway between Montalcino and Montepulciano.
Drove 3 kilometers into Buonconvento for groceries, gasoline, newspapers (including Herald Tribune) and dining in small restaurants.
Building dates from 1600s, but is beautifully restored/preserved. Five bedrooms, five baths, two living areas, two kitchens, ample for 10. We had three adult couples. There are other buildings in the complex, but, other than our communications with the delightful keyholders, we did not notice any of the other goings-on.
Grounds and sitting areas were nice. We were there in April, so did not spend the time on the grounds or outside that we would have in a summer visit. Pool looks nice but remained covered, as the ambient temperature was around 10C/50F.
Furniture is excellent and ample for ten. Since we had six, it was more than ample for us.
Beds were nicer and more comfortable than we have generally experienced in villa rentals of this type. Bathrooms are modern while still blending with historic nature of the villa.
Two kitchens, one which we used, and one which the cook used. Our ladies were on vacation, or on strike, and did not cook. I would not imagine that the kitchens would not be adequate for cooking full meals were one so inclined.
Problems or Bonuses
One good surprise was the availability and affability of the keyholders, Giovanni and Donatella. My experience before has been with more remote keyholders.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
This was a repeat for us booking through Drawbridge to Europe. The facilities have always been as good or better than perceived through their brochures. Logistics and communications have been flawless. We will start with them on all future villa vacations.
On site key holder couple Giovanni and Donatella were delightful. Could not have been more helpful. Giovanni's English is much better than my Italian, but he let me try Italian in any case. Donatella speaks less English, but since I am from Texas, we spoke in Spanish when necessary to confirm we understood each other.
We rented well in advance, not knowing what the actual price would be. Escalation from prior year's prices were limited to change in currency exchange, and that is all that we could have asked for.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
The only reason we would not stay here again would be that we were seeking variety elsewhere. I would have no problem recommending to my best friend.
Things to do in this area
Cucinas, chiesas, and Chianti. Eat, go to church, and enjoy the wine at every meal. We really enjoyed the Taverna dei Barbi near Montalcino, from whom I shipped two cases of Brunello home. Did not save any money on the shipment, but at least I have Brunello from a vineyard I have seen and enjoyed. In Florence, prior to moving to the villa, we enjoyed La Giostra at borgo Pinti 10.
