1bed/1bath apartment in Praiano, Campania WhenJune 2008, 1 week LocationThis was located in Vettica Maggiore - midway between Positano and Amalfi. It is the upper floor of a large villa, directly above the main square at the chiesa on Via Croce. Two hundred steps above the main road. There is no road access - the "roads" are concrete/cobblestone paths the width of sidewalks. There is a bus route that will take you higher up the hill, and allow you to walk 1/4 mile across the hill to get to the apartment, but the schedule is not all that frequent. We liked the exercise up and down the stairs - a couple of times a day! The view is fabulous - looking directly at the sea, Positano, and Capri in the distance. Nearby AmenitiesGroceries and restaurants were a mere 200 stairs below us. The House/ApartmentThe building is spectacularly beautiful. The highlight is the two terraces - larger than the apartment - and it feels like you are hanging over the ocean - except you are 600 stairs above the beach. The owner lives downstairs, and while you could hear them occasionally, they respected our privacy completely. We saw someone at the entrance gate only twice during the whole week. GardenThe two terraces are for your exclusive use. One is sheltered from wind - the other has completely unrestricted views, and each has a large bamboo sunshade. Two large tables for eating outdoors, two chaise lounge chairs with head shade screens. Lots of plants and flowers on the deck. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasApartment was in immaculate condition, very clean. Studio style - quite small - only a single easy chair to watch TV. Also a very small kitchen table with chairs. We took all our meals outdoors! Satellite TV with limited selection of English channels. No phone. Wall safe. Bedrooms/BathroomsBed was OK. Bathroom was really nice - very modern fixtures. Shower - no bath. Lots of counter space. KitchenKitchen had cook top - no oven only a toaster oven. Small 1/2 fridge - made the strangest bird like sounds! Worked perfect for us - we only did breakfast and appetizers. Problems or BonusesEvery afternoon we would see the sun go down on Positano, but we were facing west and caught at least two extra hours of sunshine. Agency and Representatives (and price)The apartment was everything we expected and as described. The agency drove us and our luggage up the hill - thankfully! Very helpful and provided lots of information to help our stay. Completely explained the local transportation options and offers for tours. Lots of recommendations for restaurants and activities. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?Absolutely, without qualification - unless the individual has trouble with the amount of stair climbing! Things to do in this areaSentiero degli Dei - The Path of the Gods. A hike up the cliff past a monastery and over to Positano. It's out of this world! Take the bus back! One Fire Beach/Gavitella Beach is directly below Vettica Maggiore - only 400 stairs below the chiesa (or 600 stairs below the apartment). Well worth the walk down (and up) for a swim on a hot day. If you want to use the lounge chairs/umbrella it is half the price of Positano - (€12 for two people) and they will bring you over/back from La Praia beach by boat for free. That lets you avoid the stairs. You would need to take the bus to La Praia though, because it is a mile or so on a crazy/busy road with no sidewalk or shoulder.
