Review 3576: Abaco Bed and Breakfast, Suite at Tempio di Apollo
Studio Apartment in Siracusa, Sicily
April 2008, 5 days
ABACO home (also Siracusa home coming)
We rented ‘flat at Porta Marina’ but because of some water problem we were told that we would be moved to the ‘suite at Tempio di Apollo’ which was a studio apartment.
This is a difficult place for me to review. We were met at the car rental drop off by Maria as we had arranged. She drove us to the apartment. Our first thought was how cute and well decorated the apartment was. We found that the apartment was cute but not very functional. There was no dresser to store clothes and the armoire to hang things was too short to hang coats and was being used to store a comforter on the bottom. The dining room table had ceramic canisters and bowls on it and there was nowhere to put these items so you could use the table for dining.
I had a cigarette and put it out in one of the three ashtrays in the apartment then went out to look at the neighborhood. When I came back there was a tray of cookies and a note that said not to smoke in the apartment. There was nothing on the website that said the apartments were no smoking. I think this is a poor business practice. It pisses off smokers and loses potential renters who want only non-smoking.
The apartment was very clean. Almost every time we went out, morning, afternoon or evening, Maria was in to clean and re-arrange our stuff. So it was clean but did not feel very private. The ‘private’ garden was shared with the apartment next door and about a dozen plants were lined up diagonally to separate it in half. The garden was about fifteen by twenty foot so half felt a little cramped.
Maria was sweet and helpful and provided a map to show us how to get to some of the more famous attractions. The location was very good. She left cookies and cheese and bread and honey liquor for us. She was in the apartment a lot.
There were two single fold out type chairs which I assume was for the ‘sleeps four’ part of the description. If there were four people sleeping in this apartment there would be no room to walk.
The cupboard style kitchen was adequate and there appeared to be enough dishes and silverware. There were two folding chairs that could be moved to the table but it would block the front door.
I loved the location, the apartment was OK, but I think the owner crossed the line from attentive to intrusive.
