Review 3585: Owner, La Croce Tuscan Farmhouse

Review by Ralph-VA from VA

2bed/2bath house near Greve in Chianti, Tuscany Chianti

June 2000, Sept 2001, Nov/Dec 2004, Eight weeks total

La Croce is located outside the little town of Chiocchio just off the Chiantigiana between Florence and Greve. The house is in a country setting surrounded by olive trees and vineyards in an area with lots of privacy. The views from the house, both from the patio and the upper floor, are very picturesque. We found the area very appealing. We enjoyed seeing the local people tending to their vineyards and olive trees.

Nearby Amenities

A small grocery store, post office and restaurant are within walking distance in Chiocchio.

Greve, about 8 km away, has a large grocery store, and a pretty triangular-shaped piazza with meat markets, cheese and bread shops, wine shops, pottery stores, restaurants, shops, banks, ATM machine, hardware store, etc.

The House/Apartment

The house is historical -- built around 1693 -- and nicely restored. It is in a peaceful and quiet area. An unpaved road through olive trees and vineyards leads up to the house, which is on a gently sloping hillside in a pastoral setting,.

There is a large kitchen on the ground floor and living areas and two very large bedrooms upstairs. The views from the living rooms and bedrooms are enchanting.

There is a nice outside sitting area on the patio off the walk-in kitchen. There is a large table and several chairs. The area is surrounded by olive trees, summer flowers and fruit trees.

The area is peaceful and private for reading, having a drink, and for having lunch or dinner, all of which we did on the patio regularly.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

There was plenty of furniture in all areas and all of the furnishings were in good shape, clean and comfortable.

The entire house was clean and well kept.

The bedrooms were very large with ample closet space. They had beautiful wooden floors and high ceilings. One bedroom had a tile and wood beam ceiling.

Each bedroom has an adjoining bathroom. One had a shower and one had a tub with shower. The bathrooms were clean and bright.

The kitchen was large and very usable. There were plenty of good quality pots, pans, dishes and utensils. There was a full size refrigerator/freezer, cooking range, oven and dishwasher. It was a good kitchen for cooking full meals. There was a large table with chairs in the kitchen and we were able to have meals there.

Problems or Bonuses

We were very pleased with how much attention the owners (Lino and Rita) gave us such as providing directions, advice on restaurants, assistance in making reservations for visits to museums in Florence, and general information regarding life in Italy. We consider this attention a valued bonus.

Every morning Lino went into Chiocchio before we awoke and bought fresh breads and pastries so there was always a plate of fresh cornettos and a pot of hot Italian coffee for breakfast.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked directly with the owners. The owners speak excellent English and were on site. All of our needs were met or exceeded and the reality of the house accurately reflected the published information. We stayed at three different times of the year: June, September and November/December and found the prices to be very reasonable.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We highly recommend staying at La Croce. We definitely would stay there again -- as previously mentioned, we have stayed there three times in the past and would recommend staying there without qualification.

Things to do in this area

This is an excellent location from which to make day trips to the surrounding area of Tuscany. From La Croce We have visited Florence, Fiesole, Lucca, Pisa, Vinci, Greve, Siena, Montalcino, Montepulciano, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Pienza, Pistoia, Volterra and many other towns, all of which are within easy reach.

Florence is only about 20 km away and can be reached easily by car or bus. We spent many days walking around Florence seeing its many sites and museums.

There were very good restaurants in the surrounding area of Greve, Strada, and other small towns. Most of these are small and serve meals made with fresh high quality ingredients.

On Saturdays, there is an outdoor market in the piazza in Greve where everything from food, groceries, meat, vegetables, cheese, clothing and household goods are sold. Lots of activity and a great way to get immersed in the Italian way of life. We liked going to this market and to others in the surrounding towns.
