2bed/1bath apartment just outside Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, Umbria WhenJune 2008, 4 nights ReviewAfter four wonderful days in Rome, we headed up into the verdant hills of Umbria to continue our vacation in late June. We weren't sure what to expect having booked this blindly through the website and received a few helpful emails from the owners of Petralta Agriturismo. Petralta Agriturismo is tucked away in the beautiful hills of Northern Umbria just outside the tiny medieval village of Santa Maria de Tiberina. Once off the main road and down a winding drive to their working farm, we realized it was just what we were looking for: a peaceful, quiet farmhouse close enough to sites that we could drive there, but far enough that tourists didn't outnumber the locals. In fact for most of our time, we felt like the only ones there. Perhaps most importantly the warm welcome and unobtrusive hosting by Paulo made us feel even more that we'd made the right decision. It has been a family-run side business to their working farm for over 20 years now. The farmhouse offers bed and breakfast rooms, but we stayed in one of their two apartments. They were large, well-equipped and comfortable. The grounds are covered in flowers and we spent lots of time by the swimming pool enjoying the views of the Umbrian countryside. After eating all over Umbria and Rome in some great restaurants, we ended up having our best meal at Petralta, deciding to join Paulo and a few of his friends for dinner on the patio overlooking the sunset. It was great food (homemade pasta with truffles, roast local rabbit, wine, and a wonderful dessert, topped off with homemade grappa) and warm company. We also sampled the food in Santa Maria de Tiberina having great meals at Oscari and the pizzeria at the local campsite. Sitting right on the Tuscan border, only a few kilometres from Cittą di Castello, and less than an hour to Perugia or Arezzo , Petralta is the ideal location for people looking to relax and see Umbria at their leisure. If you feel the need to be in or have quick access to a larger town or city, or if you're looking for fine china and high luxury, it may not be for you. But after four nights at Petralta hosted by Paulo and his brother Guido, we did not want to leave. It's the kind of place I not only hope to return to, but hope to return to regularly.
