Review 37: Domani, Il Poeta

Review by Pauline from NM who is a SlowTrav Contributor

apartment in hamlet near Umbertide, Umbria

Sept. 1996, 1 week

Il Poeta is a beautiful, restored medieval hamlet that has been turned into about ten luxury vacation rental apartments. We stayed in Casa Santa Lucia. It was a small house beside the main building. The furniture was the best we have ever come across in a vacation rental (more like a luxury hotel), the kitchen was small but usable, there was daily maid service and they would even deliver fresh bread in the morning. It was expensive for a one bedroom house; comparable to a good hotel. Most of the apartments in this hamlet were for larger groups.

When we stayed there, in September 1996, all the other vacation rentals were vacant, so we had the place to ourselves. I think it might have been very different with other people around. We liked the privacy, but it would have been more fun with others around. You had to drive down a very narrow country lane to get to the complex (and across a dangerous looking railroad crossing). The location was not the best for a first trip to Italy. It is in the Tiber Valley in Umbria, just north of Umbertide. It is not as beautiful or as charming as the Chianti region. In Umbria I prefer the southern region, south of Lake Trasimeno. This area is north of the lake.

So, I recommend this vacation rental, but only if it is not your first trip to Italy. If you want to explore northern Umbria, and want luxury accommodations (with lots to do in the complex itself - swimming, tennis, etc.), this might be a good place for you.

You can view the property directly: Borgo Il Poeta.
