2bed/1bath apartment in Santa Croce, Venice WhenAugust 2008, 3 nights LocationExcellent location in Venice. Very quiet and (relatively) non touristy area within walking distance of the train station. It was an apartment building next to other buildings. Our unit had a balcony onto the canal. It was a bit of a hike (at least a half hour to tourist attractions like the Rialto Bridge and Saint Mark's square) but I preferred this location. Nearby AmenitiesThe co-op for food shopping and about six excellent restaurants were all within a five minute walk. The House/ApartmentThis was a historical building that was in good shape. The upper level apartments are modern. The apartment was not too peaceful and quiet. We could hear some noise from the other units however, the biggest problem (and benefit) was being on the canal. We heard all the noise from the boats traveling along the canal as well as church bells ringing. There are about six or seven apartments in the building. GardenThere was a private balcony overlooking the canal. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe furniture was in good shape and very comfortable. It was furnished with antiques matching the ambiance of the place. It was extremely clean. There were enough chairs for our family of four. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds could have been more comfortable but overall the bedrooms were very nice and very spacious. There was only one bathroom with just a shower but it was relatively spacious. KitchenThe kitchen was modern and very usable. Being only three nights in Venice we just used it for breakfast and lunch but it was well equipped enough to cook a large meal. It was very adequately stocked. Problems or BonusesWe were surprised by the noise of the canal although we shouldn't have been. Overall I would still have chosen that apartment. I was also surprised to find out there was no air conditioning as I thought I had booked a room with air conditioning. Again I guess it was part of the ambiance and I think Venice was unusually hot when we visited. When the storm came, the temperature and humidity went down considerably. Agency and Representatives (and price)The owner, Alfonso, was extremely helpful and spoke excellent English. He gave us his cell phone number that we could use to contact him and said most days he was in his office in the building. But we didn't need to call him. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would definitely recommend this rental to almost anyone - its not wheelchair friendly as there were lots of steps up to our floor - I don't know if there are ground level apartments. They would need to be prepared for the authentic experience - and accompanying noise!! Things to do in this areaWe did all the usual touristy things. We went to three of the restaurants that Alphonso recommended in the neighborhood and were very happy. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
