3bed/2bath apartment near Montevarchi, Tuscany Chianti When6th.September, 2008, 2 weeks LocationA 10 minute drive from Montevarchi, Il Poggiolo is a converted farmhouse and barn situated on top of a hill in the middle of vineyards and olive groves. The area is very picturesque and though there is a neighbouring house, it is down the hill and out of sight. Nearby AmenitiesVisitors who are not used to strenuous walking will need a car for shopping or visiting local villages, restaurants, cafes and wineries. The House/ApartmentFienile, the former barn of an old farmhouse, was converted into a small house for accommodating up to six persons in 2006. Everything in Fienile is modern, yet decorated in traditional, simple Tuscan style. GardenAn expansive, private, sitting area outside the front door overlooks the Arno valley and a small sitting area in front of the side door overlooks the local hills. There is no pool at Il Poggiolo, though several outdoor pools are situated within easy driving distance. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasFienile was spotlessly clean, fully furnished and very comfortable. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe two bedrooms upstairs and the bedroom/study downstairs were well furnished and tastefully decorated. All of the beds were very comfortable. Both the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms had shower stalls (no baths) and modern fittings. KitchenThe large kitchen was fitted with new modern appliances and every kitchen utensil imaginable. Our group of six adults cooked and enjoyed many dinners, sat at the large kitchen table. Problems or BonusesSurprisingly, for Europe, all of Fienile's windows were fitted with bug screens. Agency and Representatives (and price)The English-speaking owners (American married to an Italian) live in the original farmhouse, adjacent to Fienile, and there was always somebody available and willing to answer questions or offer advice. Information given on their website is detailed and very accurate. Perhaps there are cheaper villas available in the area but we doubt that we could have got better value for our money. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? If we ever go back to Central Tuscany, we would love to stay in Il Poggiolo again and we have no hesitation in recommending the villa to our best friends. Il Poggiolo is fairly isolated so visitors need to rent a car, either in Florence or at the airport. Things to do in this areaWith the exception of Rome, which is three hours away by train from Montevarchi, we traveled to most of Central Tuscany's major attractions by car. For local dining, try Il Pigura in Bucine. There is also a 'Friday/Saturday only' restaurant behind a Bar in Mercitale Valdarno; details available from the owners of Il Poggiolo.
