Review 3942: Owner, Il Sogno

Review by Jeanne from OR

2bed/2bath apartment in Casperia, Lazio

November 29, 2008 to December 6, 2008, seven days

Il Sogno is located in Casperia, a walled medieval city of narrow streets for pedestrians only (the exception is for the four wheel drive ATV that delivers firewood). The owners have gone to great lengths to restore the structure to provide modern amenities without losing the charm of this fifteenth century building. Casperia is a quiet hill town away from the traditional tourist attractions. In some respects the area is reminiscent of Tuscany, rolling hills with an abundance of olive trees and family farms.

Nearby Amenities

Walking in Casperia is a challenge involving some 200 or more steps in and out, but the reward is a peaceful experience. There is a bar near by named 'Friends' which provides food and drink. There is a Coand store in the village, which is adequately stocked with a wide variety of groceries. There is a fresh pasta store in Casperia that is worth the effort to locate. There are a number of restaurants in the area, we particularly enjoyed Il Campanile in Roccantico or for a splurge the wonderful La Trota about 10 kilometers north of Rieti.

The House/Apartment

The apartment consists of two floors with the kitchen, laundry, bathroom, dining room, living room, bedroom (with fireplace) and entry way on the main floor and another bedroom and small bathroom on the lower floor.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The owners have furnished Il Sogno tastefully and with attention to detail, the remodeling included double pane windows, which proved particularly pleasant during some stormy weather.

The bedrooms are comfortable and clean as were the modern bathrooms. In retrospect it is remarkable how well some of the old doors and cabinetry were incorporated in a surprisingly functional manner.

The utensils are very high quality and the appliances were superior to what we have encountered in other rentals. We enjoyed cooking here and look forward to returning.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Chris, the owner, treated us with kindness and respect. He provides excellent information on his web site and the apartment has a wealth of information in what is perhaps the best stocked library we have encountered. The on site contact is Rosella who assisted us despite our modest knowledge of Italian. She and her husband also delivered wood for our fireplace at a very reasonable rate given the degree of difficulty getting the wood up the multitude of steps.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes we would, the apartment was great.

Things to do in this area

If you like Italian ceramiche, Viterbo is the home of Zaffera, a striking cobalt blue images of which probably predate Christianity, we had the good fortune to visit with Daniela of 'Artistica' located at Via S. Pellergino, 8 in Viterbo. We enjoyed our visit to Vitorchiana, another medieval city near Viterbo.
