Review 396: Owner, Casa Sora Chiara

Review by Pauline from NM who is a SlowTrav Contributor

3bed/3.5bath house in Montone, Umbria

September 2002, Did not stay, but visited for an afternoon

Casa Sora Chiara is a house in the small town of Montone, in Nothern Umbria. The house is just inside the city walls, so you have views over the town and out over the countryside. The town is small and the house is on a pedestrian street, so the location is quiet. You park outside the town gates and walk up some steps to the town. The house is just inside the gate.

Nearby Amenities

Just up the street from the house is the main piazza with a couple of caffes, a few shops and a few restaurants. You can get the groceries you need by walking around the town. From Montone it is a short drive to Umbertide or Citta di Castello for more shops.

You can easily walk out for coffee or for dinner.

The House/Apartment

The house is old, but recently renovated by an American couple. It is their second home. It was a top quality renovation - this is one of the nicest houses I have seen as a vacation rental.

There is a small porch by the front door where you have a table and chairs. It is not private - is on the street (but it is a pedestrian street). Only seating for two.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Fabulous furniture - beautifully decorated with quality and taste. Not overly fussy. Furniture is comfortable.

They certainly looked comfortable and beautiful. The master bedroom with an ensuite bath is on the first floor (American second). This plus a study are the only rooms at that level. The other bedrooms are on the next floor up - good for privacy. The master bedroom was very beautiful.

Gourmet kitchen with huge stove, good counter space, good appliances. The main floor is the kitchen, dining area, living room - all open.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Margie is the American owner of the house and acts as booking agent. There is a lovely woman who lives in Montone who is the key keeper. She speaks fluent English.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I highly recommend the house and the town.

My only hesitation is the area. Montone is a perfect town in northern Umbria. I have always felt, and still feel this after spending an afternoon here in September 2002, that this is not the best location for a FIRST trip to Italy. You can get to most of the Tuscany/Umbria sights from here, but you will be doing a lot of driving. However, if you have already done a first trip, this would be a lovely location - to stay in a beautiful and comfortable home and experience a very charming town closeup.

Things to do in this area

Montone itself is a nice town to explore, but it is not that large. Nearby are Citta di Castello, a much larger and interesting town and Umbertide, a larger town with some interesting things (but it is not as beautiful as many Tuscany/Umbria towns). You can go north to SanSepulcro and then drive to Arezzo. You can drive east to Gubbio. Or south to Perugia and Assisi.

A longer excursion would be to drive to Arezzo and take the train to Florence. Or drive to Siena - probably just over an hour to get there.
