3bed/2bath apartment near Coloseum, Rome WhenJanuary 7, 2009, 8 days LocationApartment is near corner of Via Labicana and Via Merulana, within 10 minute walk to Colosseum, Forum, St. John Lateran, San Clemente. True Roman neighborhood, on Tram 3 line and many bus lines (right outside of the door). Five minute walk to Metro. Nearby AmenitiesATM two doors down. Great food shops, grocery store, bar for cappuccino and cornetti, restaurants blocks away. The House/ApartmentModernized city apartment building. On first floor (one floor above street level), elevator. Very secure building, very impressive lock on entry door into apt. You can view the property directly: Colosseo, Via Labicana 16. GardenBuilding has an interior courtyard. It was winter and we didn't even ask if renters could access it. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasApartment was very comfortable, spotlessly clean, very nicely decorated. Hair dryer. Unit has no living room, but for us sitting at kitchen table was all we needed. Washing machine was great since airlines lost all three of our checked luggage. Clothes dried overnight when hung near the radiators. Heating system kept us very comfortable. There were AC units in the apartment. Bedrooms/BathroomsBeds very comfortable. Two bathrooms were great for our group of five. Plenty of pillows, plenty of blankets. KitchenYou could cook a full meal in the kitchen. We used it for picnics only. Kitchen was thoroughly and thoughtfully stocked (e.g., nice bread knife, cork screw, coffee, condiments). Problems or BonusesPaola and Umberto (landlords) were simply charming hosts. They live close and Paola speaks excellent English. They went above and beyond helping us with our missing luggage. Agency and Representatives (and price)Roman Reference was professional, helpful, responsive and thorough. The agency has many positive reviews on SlowTravel. I searched all of Rome for an affordable three bedroom, two bath apartment, they are not common in Rome, especially the affordable part. We paid €1153 (off season) for nine nights, five people. The agency's web site has several reviews of the apartment The reviews are very positive and very accurate. The apartment is more charming and comfortable than the pictures indicate. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I heartily recommend this apartment and the neighborhood. I hope to make a return visit to Rome and would stay in the same apartment. Things to do in this areaRight outside the door was a major bus/tram stop. We could walk or get anywhere in the city by bus or tram within 10 minutes, Vatican, Trastevere, Testaccio, Centro Storico. Blocks for several major churches, but it felt like we were the only tourists in the neighborhood and its shops and restaurants.
