Review 3976: Owner, La Rosa di Venezia
1bed/1bath apartment near San Marco, Venice
December 18 - 27, 2008, 8 days
What a fabulous location, our first time renting, and although I had been for Venice for two days, my husband had not been to Italy, so the location was quite important for our peace of mind.
Literally two minutes from San Marco Piazza, but in quiet side street, and overlooking the canal where the Bridge of Sighs is located, with a courtyard garden down below the bedroom window. Lots of bustle if we wanted to enter into it in either direction – 10-15 minute walk to Rialto, five minutes from a supermarket, five minutes to San Marco Piazza. Our view also took in the Hotel Columbina (and their Santa Claus climbing up the wall!) We had our own bridge over the Canal and lots of interesting gondola and some pedestrian traffic past the window if we wanted it. Shut the shutters, and the apartment was snug and fairly quiet. There was some boat and gondola traffic on the Canal, but we weren’t disturbed by it, we found it interesting.
Five minutes from a small supermarket, Internet café and many restaurants and cafes if you require them. The Rialto was only 10 minutes walk and we bought much of our cheese and veggies there. Nowhere was very far and we walked to the Rialto market the morning after we arrived and it was buzzing.
There was little noise within the building though we did sometimes hear other residents arriving or leaving. Quite dark inside the staircase and hall, but we had a pen-torch for our key. The building does have a small lift for heavy suitcases or if stairs are a problem. Rubbish collection area is off the foyer, and also a locked area with a washing machine and dryer for the apartment.
Long doors open onto a small balcony which could house two folding chairs, but it was a little chilly to sit there for long. We did spend time observing the movement on the canal, and outside the bedroom window is a garden and courtyard belonging to the Hotel next door.
Simple and elegant furnishings, unobtrusive colour choice in creams and buttery tones, warm and inviting. Simple unfussy furnishings overall, and uncluttered. Apartment has TV and stereo (Italian only), Iron, hairdryer, spare pillow and extra blankets. Air conditioned – heating was most welcome. The bedroom area has a King size bed and is at one end of the main living area with a half wall dividing it from the living area with a two-seat settee, large ottoman, table. Good size for two people, but the ottoman folds out into another bed for a third person. Kitchen and bathroom quite separate and private. Very clean and tidy.
King size bed was firm and comfortable. Very peaceful bedroom. Bathroom has Shower over the bath with folding screen and nice hot water. For the size of the apartment, it was an adequate size. It didn't Fog up!
The compact kitchen is ample with all you need for meal preparation and cleanup. Galley style kitchen with stove (has gas and electricity). No microwave or kettle, but didn’t miss it as the cook top and oven worked well. Kitchen stocked with crockery, glassware, utensils, pots and pans, cutlery etc, dishwasher and fridge. Very clean and tidy.
Problems or Bonuses
The privacy was a lovely surprise as the apartment is so close to a busy San Marco Piazza. The big bonus for us was the views of life from the windows, we never imagined they would be that good! Also a brisk walk, off the main drag, to Rialto area for shopping was good too.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The apartment did indeed match its website. We did find the kitchen and bathroom a little smaller than expected, but it wasn't too small by any means.
We were glad of a couple of previous SlowTrav reviews as a guide as we had never hired a rental, and paying 50% so far in advance (14 months because we wanted to ensure we had the apartment for Christmas) was all done on trust. Robert communicated via email and his English was excellent. We were able to use Paypal, but direct debit, not via the Visa so no credit cards. We had to change our dates due to a conflict with our next destination, we gave plenty of notice, and Robert was very obliging.
This apartment is a private rental and we corresponded directly with the owner – this is his own holiday home. Once final payment is sent (four weeks prior to arrival), you are supplied with contact details of a lovely lady (or her friend) who meets you within a certain distance (for us it was a few steps from San Marco itself) who met us and accompanied us to the flat. She then ran through all keys, amenities and generally made us welcome. You are required to either telephone or email this contact prior to arriving, and then once you arrive to telephone to arrange the finer details. This all went very smoothly without a hitch of any kind.
The apartment cost €150 per night. We felt considering its location, excellent state of repair and amenities that it was value in Venice. The canal views are amazing. Christmas in Venice with privacy was well worth it and reasonable.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
In a instant, Yes!
The only thing I would say is that if you want absolute quiet, the Canal traffic may be a little busy, but we loved it because it was about Venetians living life, and travelers enjoying their Gondola rides.
Although there was a Hotel opposite over the Canal, we heard no noise at all from it.
Things to do in this area
Everything! We explored this entire area, and further afield on foot. We also took a three day Venice Card and went to Murano & Burano. We walked much of each day, and even though December, enjoyed excellent, clear crisp weather. The views from San Marco Campanile were stunning, and adored walking along the lagoon before many people were about. We walked and walked.
