2bed/1bath apartment near Campo dei Fiori, Rome

December 2008, 2 weeks

Superb location--charming street, shops, restaurants. Within walking distance of most of Rome.

Nearby Amenities

The Campo dei Fiori, which is just up the street, is an amazing daily market for vegetables, flowers, meats, cheeses, etc. Fantastic bakery and deli on the square. Wonderful restaurants all around. Eating well is no problem. Nearby WiFi cafe, laundry, etc. A block away from a major bus route.

The House/Apartment

Very old building with maybe six apartments (not all occupied), some renovation taking place. The doorbell wasn't marked with the name of the apartment and no one seemed to know which bell was ours. We stood on the street for an hour trying to figure out how to contact the housekeeper. The apartment itself was phenomenally noisy and neither the windows nor the drapes cut down on any of the sound. Though the street itself was small, there was a lot of traffic/motorcycles and noise from the main street came right in. Otherwise, a big apartment with a good layout.

You can view the property directly: Pellegrino C.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Lots of antique furniture; living room couch was horrendous and could only "seat" two (impossible to remain in an upright position); table with four dining room chairs. No telephone; no Internet. Some of the lights bulbs were burned out, fixtures were a little shaky.

Beds and bathroom were okay.

The kitchen had poor utensils and was a challenge. Could use more flatware and more and newer pots/pans and cooking utensils. The stove burners were difficult to light and one was broken; the oven had no temperature settings. On the day before Christmas the sink drain started to leak all over the kitchen floor (the agency sent a plumber within a couple of hours).

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The agency was easy and efficient to deal with and kindly spoke English. The biggest problem was the housekeeper who let us into the apartment. She then told us that on the following Wednesday we should take the dirty sheets and towels and pile them by the door and she would leave clean ones. We did this, but she never showed up, so we had to put the damp sheets back on the bed that evening. She was unreachable by phone and we never heard from nor saw her again. Apparently the agency was also unable to reach her.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

No, not unless the windows and the couch were replaced and the kitchen was better stocked. I could see that this was once a very grand apartment, but it hasn't been loved in a long time.
