2bed/2bath apartment near Colosseum, Rome

April 2 -8, 2009, 1 week

Located on Via S. Giovanni in Laterano this apartment one flight up, was about five blocks from the Colosseum. Quiet area of street, end of street near Colosseum was very busy with pedestrians at night, did not bother us. City street.

Nearby Amenities

On this street - cafes, small markets, florist, bank with ATM, San Clemente church. We had no trouble locating a convenient market for yogurt, juice, fruit. We used the bank's ATM rather than one on the street, which was closer. We preferred the ATM in the private vestibule of the bank. Walked on via S. Giovanni every day, metro station at Colosseum. Fantastic to walk past this monument every morning and evening. Owners recommended restaurants that were nearby. We ate at several.

The House/Apartment

Apartment very quiet. Quiet end of the street. One flight up stairs. Key to get in door off street and different key to get in apartment. Small living room/kitchen. Enough room for small meal, we ate breakfast usually in the apartment. Two bedrooms, one bedroom larger than the other, beds same size though. We heard a few people on stairwell, but never saw anyone else in building. Felt safe with heavy door with two locks and being up off the street. Enough lights. TV in living room only Italian channels, maybe could offer satellite for English news, but TV not missed on this trip. WiFi was available which is nice, not every apartment or hotel has WiFi, we did not use. Heat easy to use and worked very quickly, did not have to use AC. Windows to street opened easily to let in air.

Very small balcony off living room. We used clothes line for one load of clothes we washed. Very nice with plants, the only one in the building with a small patio. Not enough room for sitting, but a nice atmosphere.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Couch was comfortable, another two chairs in living room, TV with DVD player in living room. TV only has Italian channels. Satellite would have been a nice touch for English news, but we didn't miss TV. Kitchen table enough for four. Two full beds, one in each bedroom. We were three adults, not crowded. Apartment was completely clean, bathrooms clean, enough towels. Floors clean. All appliances in working order.

Two bedrooms, one bedroom larger than the other, beds same size though. Smaller bedroom, the bed takes up most of the room, no complaints though. In this smaller bedroom shelves on wall near bed for travel clock, book, iPod and lights mounted above the shelf for reading at night, no TV but not needed. Small wardrobe in this bedroom and larger shelves for placing items. Suitcase can fit under bed.

Larger bedroom has larger wardrobe for clothing, plenty of room around bed, TV in this room but didn't use, nightstands with lamps for nighttime reading. I stayed in smaller bedroom. Bed was a little hard, but I slept on top of the comforter and covered with sheet and blanket, not complaining, but something to be commented on.

Large bathroom is very big, has washing machine. Stand up shower, enough room when you come out for drying and dressing. Window in this bathroom opens into building hallway, and we heard someone on the stairs, so figured they could hear us also. Window high enough, no one could see in plus glass is frosted.

Cleaning supplies, washing machine soap, toilet paper, hairdryer, bottle of shampoo and soap all supplied in this bathroom. Hairdryer a little hard to turn on, the switch is slightly stuck, but works fine once it is on. Outlet in larger bathroom.

Smaller bathroom is very small but has shower. We used the larger bathroom for showering, and the smaller one for things like putting on make-up, brushing teeth. A large adult would not be able to maneuver in the little bathroom. But having the extra bathroom is very convenient when you have several adults. No outlet that I saw in smaller bathroom.

Stove, small fridge, microwave, dishwasher, plenty of dishes, espresso maker, kettle for tea. Kitchen stocked with coffee, tea, sugar, milk, jams, butter, a package of cookies. Very nice to have coffee and tea already available. We used dishwasher once and on last day to leave clean dishes, easy to work. Garbage pail under sink. Everything explained by owner upon check in. Did not use pans. Kitchen seems small, but everything you need for your stay is provided. Only made breakfast.

Problems or Bonuses

Had read reviews of apartment as well as owners so wasn't surprised by the quality of the apartment or the welcoming of the owner. We loved our stay in this little apartment and would come back here again and gladly recommend the owner and apartment. We were not in the busy section of the city but we were near a very beautiful monument and that was something nice to come home to every day. The owner of this apartment is definitely a bonus.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Our plane was late, but we had emailed travel info to owner. Owner arranged driver for pick up at airport, and driver was there. Owner met us at apartment and explained how to operate appliances, showed us all the rooms, where to put belongings, explained heat, access to balcony. We were given a cell phone to use while we were in Rome for owner to contact us and we could make local calls. We used this to contact owner, and she called and checked on us. We had brought a US cell phone for calls to and from US. Owner gave restaurants recommendations close by and we went to three places recommended. Owner gave locations of bank, metro station, bus; there were brochures and maps available for us to use. I had asked owners to make two reservations for us, which they promptly did. All email questions before we arrived were promptly responded to. I specifically went with this owner because of other reviews I read about their personal touch and I was not disappointed. They were everything I had read about before our trip. We were also provided with a list of special shops that we were interested in and where these were located.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would stay with this agency for sure. I might try one of the other apartments they have just to stay at a different place, but have no problem staying in the same apartment. Apartment is larger than a hotel room and now that I know how the apartment system works, this is the only way to stay in Rome.

Things to do in this area

  • San Clemente Church
  • Colosseum
  • Le Naumachie restaurant - ate here twice.
  • Wine bar across from Le Naumachie - very pleasant sitting outside drinking wine, also got pastries here.
  • Bank with ATM on same street as apartment.
  • Clemintine restaurant for breakfast.
  • Small place next door to apartment, can't remember name - had lunch there.
  • Couple of souvenir shops close to Colosseum on same street.
