Review 4073: Owner, Residence Matteotti

Review by edgarharry from Australia

1bed/1bath apartment in Ortigia, Syracuse (Siracusa), Sicily

April 15 - April 29 2009, 2 weeks

The apartment is located on the Corso Matteotti on the island of Ortigia. It is in a twentieth century building that lines the main elegant shopping street. Equivalent of the Via Condotti.

Nearby Amenities

You could walk to several lovely cafes and join the locals for their morning cafe and people watching. There is a wonderful fresh produce market each weekday (Mon - Sat) which is within two blocks and this includes fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, bread, meats and cheeses. There is also a little supermarket close to the apartment that sells the basic food items such as soft drinks, biscuits. We had no car for the time in Siracusa and walked everywhere. The apartment is so centrally located.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is located on the first floor of a 20th century apartment complex and there is an elevator for managing luggage. It was recently renovated so is very modern with good furniture, a modern bathroom, Internet access, cable TV, practical kitchen for basic meals. It operated more as an apartment hotel since the apartment was cleaned and linens changed every three days.

No garden or outdoor areas. We went out to the Piazza for our outdoor experience.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture is very modern, comfortable and very clean lines. The living/dining/kitchen space was well laid out and quite practical. The apartment was very clean and was cleaned every three days. The unit we occupied had an excellent walk-in robe area which meant that all clothes could be hung up and luggage put out of the way. There is a shared laundry area outside the apartment front door and this gave us a washing machine, plus ironing facilities.

The bedroom had a good queen size bed, table and TV. The bedroom was located at the front of the apartment on the main street so did have street noise. The dark blackout screens did reduce the light and some of the noise.

The bathroom is a modern wonder and was greatly appreciated after a wide range of European bathrooms over the past year. There was a walk-in shower stall that was perfect for stand up showers (my husband is very tall and he notices the height of the shower nozzle). The bathroom included a range of good towels, shampoo, shower gel, soap, slippers for wearing indoors.

The apartment owner had a drawer full of breakfast provisions to assist you in having a basic breakfast at home. The kitchen was small but had a very good fridge/freezer for fresh food, a four-burner gas stove plus oven and a reasonable set of pots, knives, utensils. We typically ate out one meal and had a simpler meal at home (salad, cold meats, cheeses, olives) so didn't do too much cooking. There was also a very good little pizza parlour in the piazza so we could organise our pizza and salad evenings and eat at home.

Problems or Bonuses

The owners met us at the train station (and the train was very late) and helped us settle in. They also helped organise our transportation to the airport at the end of our visit.

The location was brilliant and we walked to so many of the major tourist sites. We also loved being able to walk out the front door and be in the middle of passagiata.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner and her team were excellent. Any request was handled promptly and the online booking process was very easy. I felt we had a good price for our two week stay.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We loved Sicily. Siracusa/Ortigia exceeded our expectations and we had a great time. We are so glad we chose to travel to Sicily and that our location in Ortigia was so good. I would recommend this apartment to other couples and we would hope to return there.

Things to do in this area

Ortigia and Siracusa are amazing historical centres so there is plenty of history to enjoy. The via Matteotti is part of the passagiata parade and for window shopping. It is easy to get to a wide range of restaurants and cafes. The Sicilian cuisine includes the most beautiful seafood as well as unbelievable desserts. The wines are very good too. So a good gastronomic experience. Go people watch, enjoy the sense of community, practice the art of sitting and watching the world go by and enjoy the history that surrounds you. It is a great place and too often people just stay for a day or don't get to Sicily at all.
