Review 4093: Owner, Torre Bettona
2bed/1bath apartment near Todi, Umbria
June 2008, two weeks
Torre Bettona is located in a peaceful "hamlet" surrounded by farms and fields. It is very close to a tiny town, Pian di San Martino, and fifteen minutes from the loveliest of Umbrian hill towns, Todi. It is also very convenient to a great supermarket, wine shop and cheese shop. A gas station, ATM and pizzeria (good take-out food) are nearby too.
The closest stores are ten minutes away by car. You could walk to a small store for limited groceries in Pian di San Martino, but we never did.
This is a very large, historical manor house that has been converted into six apartments of various sizes. Our apartment was just the one unit rented by our "owner", who lives in Rome. Our unit had a private entrance and was quite spacious and well maintained. It had all the necessary things needed for a quiet vacation with plenty of things available to do nearby if one chose.
There was no pool on the premises but a municipal one in the outskirts of Todi. Our unit had its own terrace with a table and chairs for al fresco dining.
The beds and living room seating were basic but fine. There were nice antiques included in the decoration to make the apartment cozy.
The bedrooms were large and the beds adequate. There was only one bathroom but it was nice.
The kitchen was fully equipped and we had a good time doing our own cooking each night.
Problems or Bonuses
Bad surprises: there was only one electric fan but one for each bedroom would be better. Also, it would be nice to have screens on the bedroom windows.
The good surprises were the surrounding countryside, the peaceful setting, the beautiful stone exterior of the manor house, the "chapel" next door, the homemade wine offered by a neighbor, the beautiful wildflowers we gathered, the beauty of Todi: its historic main square, pretty churches, its jewel of a theatre, Roman fountain and cisterns, its terrace park overlooking the valley below, its big parking lot and funicular up to town, its beautiful barbershop, talented artists in residence, fine restaurants some with sweeping views, etc. We were so pleased with our selection and would return in the future.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The on site person who opened the apartment spoke no English, but he was wonderful and somehow we communicated. He was always there to help us and even introduced us to another English-speaking Todi resident.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We loved this apartment in its charming setting. Every morning we awakened to the roosters crowing in the distance (very soothing!) and we watched the full moon set over Todi late at night. The location is very convenient for day trips to all the Umbrian towns and a few in Tuscany too. The neighbors whom we met were all kind and welcoming. The townspeople of Todi were friendly and helpful too.
Things to do in this area
We tried to visit a different hill town every day (Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, Gubbio, etc.). Also one day we went to Terni to see the waterfalls there. Another day we took a boat trip on the lake. One whole day was devoted to ceramics shopping in Deruta. We ended up liking Todi so much that we returned frequently. Todi has three good restaurants near the main square that we enjoyed very much.
