2bed/2bath apartment near Colosseum, Rome

When

May 15--20 2009, 5 nights

Location

The location is perfect. It is on a residential street close to the Colosseum. Neighborhood is very safe.

Nearby Amenities

Everything was outside our door. Grocery, pizza, wonderful restaurants.

The House/Apartment

Building is old but in wonderful shape. It was very quiet, but it was noisy at night if we kept windows open. However, you can close the windows and use air conditioner - that takes care of street noise. Remember, it is a city street.

The apartment looks exactly like the pics on the website. There are maybe 6-7 apartments in the building, I think, including one other owned by the Dolce Roma landlord.

Master bedroom was lovely - closet was very large. Second bedroom small but adequate. Two bathrooms with showers - one had a washing machine as well. Kitchen is fully equipped and modern.

Garden

There is a tiny balcony - not really large enough to sit there, but doors open to living room was almost as good. We hung our clothes out there after washing them - it had a line and clothes pins. I felt like I really lived there when I was hanging out my laundry.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Extremely clean and comfortable.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

Beds were firm but very comfortable. The bedrooms were lovely. The second bedroom is small but quite lovely. The rooms had beautiful murals on the walls. The bathrooms were excellent. The showers were great - always had hot water with good shower-heads.

Kitchen

Kitchen had everything one needed. Walter (owner) had it stocked with coffee, cookies, milk, etc - enough to get us started. He gave us a "coffee making" demonstration and showed us how to use the range top.

Problems or Bonuses

The owners (Walter and Natalia) were wonderful. See more below.

A great surprise was the safety of the apartment. There were two doors - one to get into the building and one to get into the apartment. The doors were quite solid. Another surprise was the map of the neighborhood and of Rome so that we could find our way around immediately.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owners, Walter and Natalia were excellent hosts. Walter met us at the apartment and spent about an hour walking us through, explaining how to use the appliances, where everything was, etc. and he also sat us down and talked with us about the neighborhood, the Rome attractions, the restaurants, the bus and subway systems, etc.

His recommendations of everything were great. We ate at his recommended restaurants, and found our way around the city easily because of his help. He also gave us a cell phone so that if we got lost, or needed help, we could call him.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

This is a perfect place to stay in Rome. I will stay here every time that I come to Rome. The location and the comfort level is excellent. We were able to save money because it is much more reasonably priced than many of the hotels in the area. And - also because we made our own espresso coffee and breakfast. We often bought some cheese, wine, and pizza or panini for a light lunch or supper. The restaurants that Walter recommended were in walking distance so we used no cabs.

Things to do in this area

Goodness - all restaurants and shops were great. Stay away from the restaurants right across from the Colosseum as they are very pricey. But the restaurants on the same street as the apartment and within a block or two were all excellent. We never spent more than 40 each - including wine.
