3bed/2bath apartment near Montevarchi, Tuscany Chianti

When

June 2009, 4 weeks

Location

Fienile is located on a hilltop with two other residences surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. You feel as if you are way out in the countryside but are actually only a few kilometers from two decent sized towns, Montevarchi and Levane. The views are beautiful in every direction.

Nearby Amenities

The nearest grocery is in Levane and is just a ten minute drive. There is a larger grocery in Montevarchi which also has several restaurants. There is a fantastic restaurant, Rendola, located in the countryside just 3k from the house. The small village of Mercatale is a nice long walk along a country road through vineyards and olive groves. There you can find coffee, a very small grocery, and a great pharmacy.

The House/Apartment

Fienile was the barn for the original farm on the land. It was completely restored/converted to a house in 2006. The house is not air conditioned but we followed the owners instructions about use of the windows and were always very comfortable. The owner's residence and one other rental are next door, and there is a privately owned home on the other side. Still, we felt as if we had the hilltop to ourselves. It was very peaceful.

Garden

There is an outside dining table and several other areas around the grounds to sit and enjoy the views. Sunset was a favorite time for me. There is no pool, but we weren't looking for that.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

One bedroom and bath is off the kitchen on the ground level. The other two bedrooms and bath are upstairs. Both bedrooms upstairs have great views out the windows. The bathrooms are a good size and well equipped. There was always plenty of hot water for the showers.

Kitchen

The kitchen is modern and very well equipped. All appliances are in great working order. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes, and utensils of good quality. There are also cookbooks available for use. It was a great place for me to try my hand at cooking like an Italian.

Problems or Bonuses

Both the owners and the neighbors were so very generous, sharing cherries from their trees and salad greens from their gardens.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Somehow, I will spend time in this lovely place again. The house and the surrounding area were worth the visit alone but it also is a great 'headquarters' for visiting Tuscany. I give it five stars easily.
