apartments on a farm near Paganico, Grosseto, Tuscany West

When

29 June - 4 July 2009, 1 week

Location

The apartment (one of three) was located in a very peaceful location. Unlike some other apartments we have stayed in, access from the main road was easy. There was a house nearby, but that in no way affected our privacy. The views in all directions were lovely and the grounds were very well maintained.

Nearby Amenities

All amenities were 10 minutes drive away. There were two supermarkets in Paginico, two bars, a gelataria and four restaurants, although when we visited, two of the restaurants were closed for holidays, as were many others in the area, which made finding an evening meal a little difficult. A list of restaurants was provided by the owner, although we were unable to find a couple of them.

The House/Apartment

There were three apartments which had been very sympathetically renovated to a high standard. We had the apartment which had a private terrace, which we preferred. The others had a seating area under a shared loggia, which we had to walk past to get to the pool.

Garden

There was a separate seating area between the apartment building and the pool with three tables and chairs. Personally we felt that maybe one or two more comfortable chairs to relax in other than at the pool, would have been nice for anyone wanting to sit away from the pool. The pool was kept very clean and there were plenty of sun loungers, etc. to use in this area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

All the furniture was in good condition. Whilst the apartment could take four adults (two on a sofa bed) comfortable seating for four would have been a challenge!

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were OK, although the availability of an extra pillow would have been welcomed. The bathroom was perfect.

Kitchen

The kitchen was very well equipped. I didn't do very much cooking, so can't really comment any further.

Problems or Bonuses

The bottle of wine and water were appreciated, although we understand that this is fairly standard practice when renting an apartment in Italy. However, the extra bottle of wine which the owner produced during the week was a lovely surprise!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I found the apartment on the Owner's Direct site. The communication from the owner was very efficient and conducted entirely in English. When the owner met us on site, he did not speak any English. This was not a problem for us, as I do speak a little Italian, but others may have found this difficult. The owner, Donato could not have been more helpful or friendly.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Yes, I would certainly recommend this apartment for anyone wanting to stay in this area. We will probably not go back, but only because we prefer Central Tuscany as a base and we have been going to the same apartment there for the last nine years!

Things to do in this area

We visited Pitigliano, which is certainly stunning from the road, if not a little disappointing when inside. Towns on the way are worth a quick coffee stop. Massa Marittima we enjoyed, and also Monte Argentario. We took the coast road around the north of the island (Strada Panoramica) and found a restaurant (il Bottegone) which had the most wonderful views of the sea.
