Review 4226: Antonella's B&B, Apartment
2bed/1bath apartment in Introdacqua, Abruzzo
July 11-18, 2009, One week
Antonella's Bed and Breakfast is located in the beautiful town of Introdacqua, nestled in the Apennine Mountains. The town of Introdacqua is small, with only 2,000 inhabitants, but we found it to be captivating. On the evening we arrived, there was an incredible free jazz concert in the town's main piazza. A group of five musicians was playing some of the best jazz I've ever heard. It turns out that Introdacqua is hosting a jazz festival in August, and the townspeople are treated to weekly free concerts on the weekends leading up to the festival. The crowd was a wonderful mixture of ages, many from the nearby town of Sulmona. We found the people of Introdacqua to be extremely warm and welcoming, particularly Antonella, the B&B's owner.
For some perspective on where Introdacqua is, it is about two hours east of Rome, and an hour southwest of Pescara, a seaside town on the Adriatic Sea. This area of Italy, lying in the Apennine mountain chain, is breath-takingly beautiful. You can hike for incredible views, or just enjoy them from your balcony. The town of Introdacqua is a mere four kilometers from Sulmona, a town of about 25,000 people. Sulmona is known for the confetti (candy covered almonds) they have been making for well over 200 years. We went into Sulmona to enjoy the daily passeggiata (family strolls each evening), the restful parks where Italians gather to chat, and to eat at the many, very reasonably priced restaurants.
Antonella's is located right on the main street of Introdacqua, so we were mere steps away from the main piazza, a small grocery store that stocked everything we needed, and a great local gathering spot, the Spillo Bar (combination bar, caffe, gelateria). There are also a few restaurants in town. A new restaurant was opening the week after our visit to Introdacqua, and we were able to attend the preview party. They gave out food samples, which were delicious. Despite being so close to the most active part of the town, the B&B was very private. For bigger shopping trips, the town of Sulmona is only 4 kilometers away. Sulmona has many grocery stores, restaurants, banks, etc.
We were thrilled with our stay at Antonella's. Staying at Antonella's B&B was like having our own home in Introdacqua. The B&B is huge! There is a balcony off of the kitchen, as well as one off of the largest bedroom. The larger bedroom has lovely furniture and the views from the window and balcony are amazing! One of my favorite parts of our stay was to sit on the balcony late at night to gaze at the twinkling lights of the mountain towns, and the star-filled skies. The larger bedroom has a very comfortable queen-sized bed, as well as two twin beds. Even with three beds in the room, there is still so much open space. The other bedroom was also lovely, with two twin beds. The bathroom has been renovated within the past year, so it is modern and spacious.
The entire unit was immaculate. Antonella obviously takes hospitality seriously. Even though we were in Introdacqua in mid-July, the evenings were cool due to the mountain breezes. Still, on the first warm day of our stay, Antonella delivered a large fan. She anticipated our needs, and checked on us several times during our stay to see if we needed anything.
The kitchen is giant and well-appointed. We prepared several large meals in the kitchen, and found it to be equipped with everything we needed for cooking. There are even a couple of cozy chairs near the dining area, where we curled up to read from the huge collection of magazines and books that Antonella has. The kitchen is complete with a washing machine and two clothes drying racks.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Even though it was high season, it was only €380 for the whole week. It was the best deal of our five week stay in Italy.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would return to Antonella's B&B in a heartbeat. The only limiting factor I can think of is that the apartment is up two flights of stairs, which would rule it out for some people. Even writing about Antonella's and Introdacqua makes me long to be back there!
