Review 4330: Owner, Villa Bellavista (#67449)

Review by TimW from UK

apartments in Santa Maria di Castellabate, Campania

September 2009, 2 weeks

The apartments overlook are set back and above the main coastal road. The private road that covers the last 100 metres or so is fairly steep, so "grounding" the car was not uncommon.

Apartments 1 and 2 share a patio area, there is a third apartment below. The views from the patio/balcony area are superb - photographs do not no them justice and on a clear day Capri and even Ischia are visible across the bay of Salerno.

The proximity to the next door villa was never a problem for us (in the second week of our rental more of our family were staying there). The property is fairly private - there was no obvious feeling of being overlooked.

The big plus from my point of view was that the climb down to the beach, although it included a flight of 100 steps, took only five minutes, and was not too difficult. The beach itself is lovely - clean, sandy with a gentle slope into the water.

Nearby Amenities

Anybody without mobility problems could walk down to Santa Maria di Castellabate within 10-15 minutes where there are restaurants, bars and shops including a supermarket in the town centre.

The House/Apartment

The building is quite modern and in very good condition. Layout wise, on walking from the patio area you entered a lounge/dining area. The kitchen was an open plan are around the corner from this. A corridor from the lounge led off to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. The second apartment's entrance faced the sea and opened onto the balcony, which carried on in a L shape to the patio area.

A third holiday apartment was just below the balcony, and a fourth apartment, lived in by the owners mother was beside this.

Very pleasant, large tiled area with seating, a table and a large awning. There are several large decorative pots on the patio containing flowers. We spent most of our time out on this area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartments were very well furnished and comfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean. There were plenty of both indoor and outdoor chairs. We never bothered to turn on the small television during our stay, but I believe it had many satellite channels.

The network socket providing Internet was a nice feature, as I had brought my laptop.

The beds were comfortable. The bedrooms were functional - beds, chair, bookcase - but perfectly adequate and we have no complaints. The lights contained very efficient and quiet ceiling fans, which kept the rooms at a pleasant temperature.

The bathroom in Apartment 1 was a little tight for space. I am 6 foot and heavy build, and would have had difficulty getting into the shower if I were any heavier. The second apartment had a slightly bigger bathroom, and the shower was easy to use. The presence of the washing machine in both apartments was a welcome feature.

Although small, the kitchen was very well equipped. A large "range" stove and oven could have worked in a restaurant, let alone an apartment. A smaller oven was also available for cooking smaller items.

Problems or Bonuses

Bonuses: Very friendly and helpful owners. Some nice little touches - for example large files in different languages giving history of the area, recommended sites, bus, train and ferry timetables, restaurant phone numbers and addresses.

No really bad surprises, although the steepness of the road up to the flat was a bit of an issue for the very long Alfa station wagon that we had hired.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner met us on arrival - his English was good. The website information was all accurate, and there were no nasty surprises.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Would I stay again? Absolutely, in fact I probably will. Similarly I would recommend it to a friend.

Things to do in this area

I love this area of Italy. There are sufficient restaurants in the area to keep you interested for a while. The beach is beautiful, and good for children. Paestum is only 25 minutes away, Pompeii and Herculaneum about 90 minutes.
