Review 4332: Le Casine di Castello, Il Nido
studio apartment in Castelmuzio, Tuscany South
October 3-10, 2009, 1 week
Our apartment was in the small village of Castelmuzio. It is on the bottom floor of a building. The upper floors are a larger apartment owned by the same family. The village was very quiet and charming. We had lots of privacy even though the building is adjacent to other buildings on the same street. Castlemuzio is on a hill in the beautiful country of Tuscany. From the edge of the village you can see St. Anna Camprena Monastery where they filmed The English Patient.
The center of the village is a very short walk (like two minutes). There is a fabulous restaurant that served us delicious Tuscan food. Their house wine is equally amazing. There is a cafe/bar downstairs where you can get cappuccino and croissant for breakfast. They also have other goodies like candy and a refrigerator with cold cans of Coke (I'm an addict). For either €1.50 or €2/30 minutes you can hook your laptop up to their Internet connection. They are very friendly and at least one person spoke English.
The Coop (small grocery store) is also only a 2-3 minute walk from the apartment.
The town of Pienza is only a 10-15 minute drive away.
The apartment was in very good shape and in true Tuscan style. It was the perfect size for two people. It is has an open space plan a bit like a studio apartment. It was very romantic, though.
There was a lovely garden exclusively for us. It had a table with two chairs, two nice lounge chairs, a grill, and lots of plants. There was even basil and parsley. It was right off of the kitchen and made a perfect space for dining outside.
There was no living room, but we did not need one. Furnishings were very Tuscan and in good shape.
Beds were comfortable enough (I got great sleep every night)and sheets were good quality and clean. The bathroom was roomy and clean with a nice shower and vanity with enough storage. A variety of toiletries were provided along with a hairdryer. There was an armoire in the bedroom with extra blankets and room to hang clothes.
It was a nice, usable, Tuscan-style kitchen. Stove, microwave, toaster, sink. The sink even has a third knob ... you have spring water for drinking right at the sink! There were plenty of plates, cups, wine glasses, etc.
Problems or Bonuses
Isabella provided us with a free bottle of the family's house wine upon arrival. The kitchen was already stocked with food and drink for breakfast, as well as a variety of spices for cooking. There was also a bottle of the family's own olive oil. There was a good selection of tea and some liquor already there. There were bikes available for free use as well. We had a perfect stay.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
Isabella greeted us in Pienza and we followed her to the apartment in Castlemuzio. She showed us around the apartment and made us feel right at home. She speaks great English. The place was exactly like the photos and description on the website. It was €790 for one week in October. A great deal because our stay included at least four activities.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would totally stay here again. We plan on staying 2-3 weeks when we finally can make it back.
Things to do in this area
There is so much to do in this area. Siena is only an hour away. Florence is only like two hours away. The Val d'Orcia towns of Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, are within 10-30 minutes away.
The family provides many activities that give you a true taste of Tuscany. We were fortunate enough to be there for the grape harvest. We helped for two to four hours and Isabella made us a huge, delicious lunch afterward. We toured their farm in Pienza and sampled their wines, cheese, and meats. We also purchased some of their products and cooked them at the apartment.
