villa, sleeps 12, near Sarteano, Tuscany East WhenApril 2002, 1 week ReviewPalazzo diPiero sleeps 12, with 3 bathrooms. It truly is a magnificent castle, complete with frescoes and a courtyard! There is a kitchen with adequate cooking gear, stove, dishwasher, etc. with an old cooking hearth and large table. Rooms are a bit dark in the old style, but we were there during an uncharacteristically cold, rainy week in April, 2002. Heating was the biggest drawback in the early spring. In warmer seasons, this place would probably offer welcome respite from the heat. During our week, fireplaces did not throw enough heat. Oil heaters helped some. Washing machine in one of the bathrooms. Beds seemed fine and everything was clean. This place would be ideal for a group traveling together and wanting space not to be on top of each other. The gardens and patio space were beautiful, even in very early Spring. Swimming pool opens in June. Gorgeous countryside! 2 other rental buildings on the same estate. One other, Sant' Elisabetta reviewed as well. The estate is about 6 km from Sarteano and is on a "white road." Good restaurants nearby. Not far from Chiusi, where there is a train station for trips to Florence, etc. A car would be necessary. Large, modern grocery store, "Etruscan Market," in a minimall about 10 minutes away. Drawback: the manager, Berenice, lives near Siena. Contacting her to get heat was difficult, as we did not have a phone. Pluses: Berenice, the manager, is a lovely young woman who speaks fluent English. She met us there the first night. There is a caretaker who lives locally, but does not speak English -- although we did manage to communicate about the heat. Estate olive oil and wine available, very reasonably.
