Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 4379: Le Manzinaie, Apartment
apartments on an estate near Montepulciano, Tuscany South
October 2009, 5 days
This is an apartment on the ground floor of a Tuscan Farm House in the loveliest part of Tuscany. It is just a ten minute drive to Montepulciano, in my opinion the best hill town for a visit in this part of Tuscany. It sits by itself in a beautiful setting surrounded by farm fields.
The nearest town is just a five minute drive away and had restaurants, a few shops, a gas station, and laundry facilities.
This building was restored by the family who owns it and since it is a historical building, they had to meet the demands of a committee who oversaw the restoration. It is a very peaceful setting behind an iron gate and a lane of beautiful Cyprus trees. There are four apartments on the ground floor and the family lives up on the second floor. There are two separate villas that are larger for rent, and another building that is where the family hosts a weekly dinner.
The grounds are very pretty, with a vegetable garden, a nice swimming pool, gazebos, and outside space for wandering.
The apartment is very nicely decorated by the owner with stenciling on the walls, a comfortable country kitchen with a little sofa, spotlessly clean, and set up for two people, but the larger villas are set up for four people.
We had two twin beds, a very large bedroom with a desk, armoire, and lots of floor space, which we found unusual in Italy. The bathroom was the best part, with a jacuzzi bathtub, separate ample shower (also unusual in our experience in Italy), double sinks, and separate bathroom heater. The tile work in the entire apartment but especially in the bathroom is very creative and pretty.
The kitchen was well appointed with dishes, glasses, and cooking supplies. They also stocked the kitchen with all the food we would need for our first meal there and a bottle of good local wine. We cooked here quite often and they even supplied us with a homemade dinner we cooked ourselves.
Problems or Bonuses
The family dinner they provided was just over the top. What a hospitable family! The cooking class was a big highlight for us. Alice speaks such good English that we utilized her skills for organizing our daily trips and teaching us about local culture.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We booked directly and Alice, the 22 year-old daughter who lives here handled all the arrangements beautifully. This place was even nicer than we had expected.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
I would love to stay here again but for longer next time! I would love to have my daughter spend her honeymoon here and will strongly recommend it.
Things to do in this area
Day trips to historic hill towns are very easy from this location. We drove to Siena for the day, toured wineries, wine cellars, and loved the shops in Montepulciano and The Grotto restaurant. There is an abbey nearby and we intended to get there during the time when the monks are chanting but ran out of time but we hear it is awesome. There are fortresses, churches, and beautiful countryside and wildlife to see. It is very close to Cortona where "Under the Tuscan Sun" was filmed.
