Review 4381: Sleep in Italy, Orso Big

Review by williamf from MA

2bed/2bath apartment near Piazza Navona, Rome

October 2009, 2 nights

Orso Big is located on via del Orso just north (two blocks) of Piazza Navona in Rome. One of the best features of this property is the location. We were able to walk everywhere, plus the Piazza Navona cab stand is two blocks from the door. This apartment is on the first floor (up one flight of stairs) with its own private entrance (door is right on the street).

Nearby Amenities

There is a bakery two doors down and a bar on the corner. We found a restaurant that we loved right around the corner (Old Bear). Being so close to Piazza Navona, everything is very convenient. A full service grocery was a few blocks away near the Pantheon. This would not be a good apartment if one has a car as there is no place to park, but a car is not needed.

The House/Apartment

The apartment almost felt like a small house because of the private entrance; other apartments above were accessed from an interior building courtyard. We couldn't hear any other noises from the building except some kitchen noise from the small coffee bar on the ground floor. The building was quite old and in good repair. The apartment was very clean. The layout of the apartment is a little strange because one of the bedrooms and one bath are actually interior rooms with high windows that open into the back bedroom and bath. This would not be ideal for two unrelated couples traveling together, but was fine for a family. The only windows are in the front living room and the back bedroom and bathroom. The stairway from the street is quite narrow and steep; it was a bit of a challenge to climb with heavy bags.

You can view the property directly: Orso Big.

No outdoor space.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture was adequate. There were plenty of places to sit in the living/dining room; the table had six chairs. The apartment was very clean.

Beds were comfortable; the bedrooms were small and sparsely furnished. The interior bathroom had a small shower; the back bathroom had a tub with hand-held shower attachment. As noted above, one bathroom has a high window that opens above the tub in the second bath, which was for light and ventilation but a little strange. The bathrooms were both in very good shape and supplied with hair dryers and plenty of towels. Hot water was good.

We were only here for two nights so didn't do our usual cooking, we prepared breakfast and snacks. The kitchen was small but seemed well equipped. No paper towels or kitchen hand towels; not very good knives. Fridge and freezer were small but nice; there was no dishwasher; built in dish rack above the sink. Small cook-top worked well.

Problems or Bonuses

The biggest surprise was how wonderful the location really was. It is a very quiet tiny street so close to so much activity it made a great sanctuary to retreat to and regroup.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Sleep it Italy was easy to deal with and very responsive. We liked that they have Skype service on their website and we were able to talk with them several times from home. We only had two nights and most apartments are three night minimums. It happened that this apartment was only available for the two nights we needed because of other reservations, so the agency checked with the owner and received permission to rent to us for the two nights. We met the owner at the property and paid him the balance of the rental. He met us on time and was easy to work with although his English was not extensive. Sleep in Italy also coordinated a car transfer for us to FCO as we had a very early flight. The driver was a few minutes early and was very good; he operates his own private car service and we will use him again. Vicki at the agency has been great. She has been helping us work with the owner to retrieve a small bag of gifts we left behind.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

For two couples (related) traveling together, this was such a nice alternative to booking two hotel rooms. The cost was roughly half of a hotel stay and gave us the living area and kitchen for casual time together. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others with the understanding about the interior bed and bath rooms.

Things to do in this area

I will submit a restaurant review for Old Bear, but the location gives you easy access to hundreds of wonderful things to do in Rome.
