Review 4446: Views of Italy, Maggiore and Opera

Review by jpax from TN

apartments on Via Canonica in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna

2009, 1 week

The apartments are located in a building that is hundreds of years old. The location is on the outer edges of the Jewish Ghetto. Maggiore is a fourth floor apartment and Opera is a second floor apartment with no lift.

The area is ideal and within very close walking distance of Piazza Maggiore. The area is very safe and the other tenants in the building are very quiet.

Nearby Amenities

Cafes are plentiful for coffee and pastry within one or two blocks. A small convenience market is just outside and a larger market is 100 yards away. You can walk to most any location in historic Bologna.

The House/Apartment

The building is less than five hundred years old. The apartments are renovated within the last ten years. They are well kept.

We booked Maggiore and Opera. Both apartments were very comfortable. The service from Views of Italy was very helpful and prompt.

Maggiore is two apartments combined. This means you have two living areas with televisions and comfortable sofa and chair in one and sofa and dining area in the other. The primary apartment has a kitchen, dining room/sitting area, two bedrooms with a king and twins. The bathroom has a tub/shower, bidet, double sink. The entry is nice with a coat rack that was very helpful as we experienced snow and cold weather.

Opera was nice with a tiny bathroom with a very small shower. The kitchen was adequate. The bedrooms had a king and twins. The furnishings in Opera were more attractive than Maggiore. Opera is on the 1st floor (2nd US) and is closer to the street noise. Maggiore is on the 3rd floor (4th USA). The views from Maggiore are quite nice.

I have booked many apartments including locations in the Caribbean, France, Edinburgh, Italy, etc. Because some of these villas and apartments were extremely nice, my opinion of the Views in Italy apartments is relative. That being said, this is an average apartment in an excellent location. The beds are quite comfortable. The bathrooms are very functional and more than acceptable. It appears that they were renovated within the last decade. Towels and linens are good, but worn. The furniture is comfortable and average. Tiny television with BBC and Euronews being the only English channels. The kitchen is good for reheating your purchases from Tamburini, but not for the gourmet cook. Of course, in Bologna you need to leave the cooking to the restaurants.

Be warned that upon arrival your representative speaks no English.

An example of the service was demonstrated when Maggiore had an electrical breaker flip, resulting in a brief power outage. The representative, Ernesto, was readily accessible on New Years Eve. He quickly talked me through the location of the breaker box and quickly remedied the problem. Do not be put off by the electrical issue. This only occurs when you run two major appliances at one time. I did not realize that a kettle was a major appliance. Also, this is a very old building in the beautiful Jewish Ghetto.

The excellent service was further demonstrated by the efforts of Sally to answer all questions and meet every request. She arranged a very professional transfer for our excessive luggage that was on time on New Years Day!

I would recommend this apartment without reservation.

There is no outside area, but the roof top views from the apartment, Maggiore were beautiful.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings are average and in average condition. The cleaning was acceptable, but there were a few cobwebs. I did not feel that the apartment was dirty.

Space was ample.

The beds were firm and quite comfortable. I was glad that I brought my own pillow.

The kitchen had a service for at least seven, a few pots and pans, a kettle, a stove-top espresso maker, four gas burners, an oven, no microwave, washer, laundry drying rack.

Problems or Bonuses

No significant surprises to report.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Views of Italy was the firm. Sally manages the reservations. She is efficient and helpful. She was very straight forward in answering my many questions and showed patience in dealing with me.

The local representative was extremely helpful when we had a breaker flip.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would highly recommend the apartments. Be aware that it is not a luxury apartment, but it is comfortable.

Things to do in this area

Diana is quite nice. Enjoyed Cesarina. Tamburini is a great deli for take out.
