2bed/2bath house in Gualdo Tadino, Umbria WhenOct 28 - Nov 18 2009, three weeks ReviewFour of us had the very great pleasure of staying at Porta San Donato for three weeks last November and could not have been happier with our choice. After much searching on the net, we zeroed in on this property. From the get go, Elaine, the owner, was extremely helpful and efficient with our reservations down to explicit directions on getting to the house. No wrong turns here! After a month of traveling we were looking forward to a restful stay at this very unique property. A gatehouse from the 1200's no less. How exciting! It may be old but the interior is definitely 21st century. Every convenience has been thought of. Plenty of hot water, comfy beds, kitchen utensils and gorgeous decor. This is not just a vacation property, it is a home!! The pictures on the site are exactly what you get - absolutely no glossing over here. The house is ideally located for exploring Umbria from the Adriatic to Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Gualdo Tadino is an equally interesting town with delightful shopkeepers and sights. Paolo at the optometrists is a charmer and eagerly talks up his town and the area. Groceries, cafe, post office, restaurants, Internet service, even a dollar store are all within walking distance. Elaine has even provided her guests with maps showing their locations. Finding your way couldn't be easier. The basket of pasta, sauce and other goodies was very welcoming, making us feel right at home. Lots of travel books, an English/Italian dictionary, music CDs and DVDs in English were a delightful and thoughtful treat. We were definitely not fluent enough to watch Italian TV! On this trip we stayed at apartments in both Paris and Rome. They did not measure up to Porta San Donato at all! This truly is a find! We would not hesitate to recommend this property for one second and have indeed already steered fellow travelers in this direction. Awarded with 10 gold stars in our books.
