2bed/2bath house in Gualdo Tadino, Umbria WhenNovember 20 - 29 2009, 10 days LocationThe apartment is over one of the original gates into the city of Gualdo Tadino. The entrance was very private because it was inside the arch way of the gate the apartment is above the gate and as such there are no adjacent neighbors. Because of the age of the gate (1242) some of the walls are three feet thick so there is little or no sound coming from outside the apartment. We completely enjoyed the area it is on the outside wall of the original city. The street ends in stairs so there is only very light traffic going through the gate. Parking was easy because the streets outside the gate are not as twisted. Nearby AmenitiesEverything was within easy walking distance, there is even a hospital just down the street. The House/ApartmentThis is the most historical place I've ever slept in! It was built in 1242 and the arch had to be widened in 1292 so the pope's carriage could fit through. That's 200 years before Columbus! The apartment has just been renovated. Everything is in great shape. The apartment is on two floors over the gateway there are no other apartments in the structure. GardenThere is no outside area to sit in, there is a park just up the street that has a play area for children. Even if there had been a private area outside Gualdo Tadino was waiting to be discovered, we would not have used it. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe apartment was very clean and well appointed. The living room is almost too comfortable with a couch and to big armchairs. There is also a fireplace, books to read, and travel books as well. The dining area is in the kitchen plenty of chairs to go around. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were very comfortable all the walls have been freshly painted everything is new including the floors and windows. The bathrooms were shiny clean. KitchenWe rented an apartment because we needed to be able to cook all our meals as one of our group has serious food allergies. There were plenty of pots and pans, a microwave and the refrigerator was big enough for everything we purchased at the nearby supermarket. I enjoyed working in the kitchen it was well set up and had plenty of lights. Problems or BonusesHad never spent any time is this part of Italy it is now our favorite. The city is in the Appenines Mountains it was beautiful even in November. The people were friendly, inquisitive and seemed genuinely happy that we were there exploring their city. We felt very safe. Agency and Representatives (and price)We couldn't be happier with the agency or the on site person. The owner emailed us instructions on how to find the apartment and even included phonetic spelling of different words in Italian in case we needed to contact the on site person. She didn't speak English but it didn't matter if she didn't understand our question she would telephone her daughter who spoke English. There was a welcome basket when we arrived, which was really appreciated. The apartment was even better than the photos because you can't capture the place in photos. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?I would stay there again in a heartbeat! I have already recommended it to everyone I know and have spoken so highly of it that my friends have forwarded the website to their friends! We took our two daughters and felt very relaxed about letting them go run errands etc., on their own. Both of my daughters would like to move there. Things to do in this areaThere is tons to see in Gualdo Tadino and it is on the old Roman road called the Flaminia. There is a train station in Gualdo Tadino and if you have a car it is an easy drive to Assisi, Perugia, etc. It is one of the pottery centers and near many others including Deruta and Gubbio. Because it is in the mountains when you want a break from sight seeing, you can go for walks up into the mountains, which are very old and gentle. There is a huge national park nearby too.
