2bed/1bath apartment in Cannaregio, Venice

When

March 27-April 3 2010, One week

Location

Casa Battello is perfectly situated down a small alley in the area of Cannaregio. A one minute walk from the canal and near two different vaporetto stations, the location is quiet and peaceful yet close enough to the main thoroughfare to be convenient. This is a real neighborhood so you will see the same people every day from the Italian grandmas going to do their shopping in the morning to the young mother whose three year-old son is learning to ride a bicycle and just may crash into you. If you're looking for a tranquil escape from the craziness of touristy Venice, this is the place for you.

Nearby Amenities

The local wine shop was amazing! They fill up water bottles with the wine of your choice. The price was great and the samples were lovely!

There are several restaurants in the area including take-away pizza, which was convenient. The apartment is near a main strip where there are several market stands, bread shops, and supermarkets.

The House/Apartment

The apartment exceeded my expectations! It was situated over two floors and very spacious. Like all buildings in Venice it has its crumbly aspect, but seemed very sound and I never felt that it was shabby.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were just fine and perfectly suited to our use. The apartment was very clean and there was plenty of space for more people.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The beds were extremely comfortable even the pull-out couches! The bathroom is large, but may be difficult if several people are trying to use it at one time. For us, though, it was no problem.

Kitchen

The kitchen was a cheery, well-equipped space to cook up some amazing purchases from the Rialto market. Everything we needed was available and there were even more utensils and cooking gear that we could have used had we wanted to cook some specialty items. The small dinning room table was perfect for gathering around to eat, chat and sip wine throughout the evening.

There is an oven and a microwave along with four gas burners. There is also an electric kettle for making tea.

Problems or Bonuses

There were so many bonuses we did not anticipate. A shopping trolley, umbrellas, three shelves full of useful books, free postcards, hair dryer, washing machine, color-coded towels so you wouldn't accidentally use someone else's, etc. Wonderful homey touches that made our stay so special. They even had a book of suggestions and comments from previous guests that was very helpful and at times hilarious.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Jonathan and Alasdair are wonderful to deal with! They sent a packet of information ahead of time that included spreadsheets of the cost breakdown of different transportation options, local restaurant and food shop recommendations, detailed instructions to get to the apartment and much more. Their website by itself is a great resource for trip planning.

They don't ask for a deposit but rather go by honesty. This is huge considering most rentals require anywhere from 200-400 euros for a deposit.

The prices vary by season and availability and we just happened to hit it at a good time. The price was amazing (400 for a week right before Easter).

It is a Saturday-Saturday rental so it may be difficult for some people's schedules. In our case, we molded our trip around this rental and were so happy we did!

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would whole-heartedly recommend this rental. It is such a lovely place in any city, but for such a gem to be in Venice is rare. Don't hesitate to book this lovely vacation home!

Things to do in this area

It's Venice! Take the local vaporetto. Wander through the Jewish Ghetto. Take the #1 Line down the Grand Canal and sit in the front. Watch the sun rise on Saint Mark's Square early one morning. Sit along a canal and dangle your feet while eating a gelato. Enjoy life at a slower pace.
