Vacation rentals in Italy (villas, farms, estates, agriturismo, apartments)
Review 4547: Villa Vacanze Paradiso, Apartment
apartments on a farm near Neviano, Puglia
May 2010, 8 days
The apartment is on a farm, it is one of seven in a walled enclosure. The owners' residence is also in the enclosure. Inside the enclosure is a beautiful garden with a pool. Outside you are surrounded by olive groves. We loved the area. This area is very flat so there are no 'long' views (like in Tuscany). Instead there are olive groves separated by old (maybe ancient) dry stone walls.
You definitely need a car to stay here. There are several small towns in the area that are quite close for groceries and restaurants. We did most of our shopping in the supermarket in Neviano -- about five minutes by car. There is also a good pizzeria there. The excellent Trattoria Adriana is located in Tuglie--also 5 minutes away by car. We went to the weekly market in Gallipoli (30 minutes) and got some great bargains. Of course the fish market in Gallipoli was fabulous, but make sure you confirm prices before you buy (or ask Mr. Paulo, one of the owners, and he will connect you to a fisherman he knows).
The apartment and grounds were in excellent condition. We stayed in Bougainvilla (apartment 2) which was right next to the pool. Perfect! There are a few other apartments and rooms in the complex but the whole area was peaceful and quite.
The gardens were very well-kept! The pool was wonderful. Our apartment had a covered outside dining area that we used every day. Also, there were pool chairs right outside our apartment - very convenient. Mrs. Luisa grows herbs for her cooking that you are welcome to share. Overall, the outside area was among the nicest we have seen.
All furniture was in good shape and the apartment was very clean. There is just a kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. The rooms are a little small but sufficient for a couple. We also used the Internet in the 'dining pavilion'. The enclosure made the outside areas feel like part of the living area.
The bed was comfortable and there was sufficient storage. The bathroom was small but usable and there was plenty of hot water!
The kitchen was the most well-equipped kitchen I have ever encountered in a rental. It was a joy to work in! We made almost all of our own meals. The knives were sharp, there was an assortment of good quality pans, including a pressure cooker, and more utensils than I needed. There is no oven, but there is a four-burner cook-top and a microwave oven. The fresh herbs in the garden were very flavorful, and the owners shared the strawberries and lemons they grew with us. I have not tasted strawberries so sweet since I was a child.
Problems or Bonuses
The bad ... well there really isn't any. We like a 'long' view, but that is just not possible in this area and the beauty of the enclosed grounds and pool soon helped us adjust.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
The owners were great. The manager speaks very good English. The reality of the apartment was better than the website. We paid €340 for the week.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We absolutely recommend this rental! It is one of the nicest in which we have ever stayed. As a matter of fact we liked it so much that we extended our stay here one day rather than traveling on toward Rome.
Things to do in this area
We visited Gallipoli and Lecce, spent time on the beach, and drove around the 'bottom' of the heel. All were excellent. Lecce reminds me very much of Siena, there were wide sand beaches near Gallipoli, and the drive was gorgeous. I've already mentioned Trattoria Adriana, which was very good.
