Review 4571: Appartamenti al Poggiolo, Giardino Apartment 4
apartments in Montepulciano, Tuscany South
May 2010, 1 week
We stayed in Giardino Apartment 4, which is next to three other apartments. The four apartments share a lovely private garden area, two laundry rooms, and an enclosed parking area. The apartments are located along the ancient town wall on a very quiet street. It is only 1/2 block to the two main streets of Montepulciano. This apartment has a private outside entrance. We never heard noise at all from the street or other apartments. The location is perfect. We had extraordinary views of the Tuscan hillside from our windows.
If you wanted to take day trips to other towns, it is in a great location. Pienza, which is the only day trip we took, is only about 15 kilometers away. Many wonderful hill towns are within 1-2 hours away, including Florence.
It is only a block to town center businesses and easy walking distance outside of the walls to a larger supermarket. This town was the perfect size for us. It was small enough to be able to walk to anything (though you get a good workout because it's on a hill) and large enough that there were lots of shops and restaurants, many that we didn't have enough time to explore. It was our intent to take day trips most days to other hill towns, but we loved Montepulciano so much that we never left! That's partially because our apartment was so lovely and comfortable. We had a car, but you would definitely not want to drive inside the walls of this town. The gated parking area is easy to get to, so leaving to drive to other areas is very convenient.
This building appears to be built alongside the historic walls of Montepulciano. It is a historic building that has been renovated and is absolutely beautiful. The apartment is just as described, only even lovelier that the photos. The furnishings and apartment are in perfect condition. You can tell the owners take extraordinary care of it. Everything is top quality and perfectly clean. The couches seem new and the beds have nice firm mattresses. Although there are three other apartments in the building, you all have private entrances and really don't even know anyone else is there.
Behind the apartments is the gated parking area and garden. When we were there, the weather was rainy, so we didn't use the garden, but it is private with a surrounding hedge and very lush with lovely patio furniture. It would be a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine.
One of the things we liked about this apartment is that there was plenty of room to relax. The apartment is on two floors with the living area and kitchen on the top floor and the bedrooms and bathrooms on the lower floor. We are a family of four with two teen-aged boys and we never felt like we were on top of each other. There is a nice-sized couch and two comfy chairs in the living room so everyone had a place to curl up and relax. The kitchen was large enough for us to all be in it cooking for meals and a nice table to eat or play games.
As I said above, the furniture is beautiful, comfortable, and everything was perfectly clean. The bathrooms are modern with roomy showers. The kitchen and bathrooms are all tile, so easy to keep clean. The windows have screens on them, so you can have them open without worrying about bugs (although we never saw a bug when we were there!)
The bedrooms are large with great storage space. There is even enough storage for us to put our suitcases away so we never had to look at them. The bedrooms and linens are very high quality and prettier than the pictures on the website show. There is a larger bathroom with a roomy shower, and a second bathroom with a roomy shower that is attached to one of the bedrooms. The beds are twins so can be used as two twins or one large bed. There is great lighting all over the house.
We cooked frequently in the kitchen and found there to be plenty of dishes, pots and pans, etc. My boys were thrilled to find a "juicer" so bought fresh fruit from the markets everyday to make new fruit juices. (You never know what will excite your teenager!) The dishwasher was great, good quality kitchenware, etc.
Problems or Bonuses
Our big surprise was that other than a brief trip down the road to Pienza, we never left Montepulciano all week. Our weather prediction was for rain every single day. So for us it was of ultimate importance that our accommodations were pleasant and comfortable. What a perfect place! We happily lounged and read in the mornings and by afternoon the sun came out and we wandered around town looking in shops, exploring churches, investigating wineries, and trying the Tuscan cuisine.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We rented directly through the owners, Margherita and Elena, who are sisters. We paid €900 for one week in May. When we arrived on Saturday, they and their husbands all came out to the garden to greet us like a greeting committee! They were so friendly and made us feel so at home. Their English is excellent. During the months before our trip they always responded to e-mails immediately and were very honest about their apartments, differences between them, which one would fit our family the best, etc. We have never traveled outside the U.S. before and are used to arranging deposits and paying beforehand. They wanted to do everything by the "honor system", which tells you a lot about how personable they are. They have begun to make olive oil and even gave us a complimentary bottle, which really made our bread dipping tasty - it was wonderful! Although they are in Rome during the week, we had numbers to contact them if need be. When they are in Montepulciano, they live just around the corner from the apartment and made it clear we were welcome to stop by whenever we wanted.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
It was delightful and I wouldn't change a thing. If we ever get back to Tuscany, we will definitely stay here again. There would be no reason to try somewhere else. It is perfect for a family of four or two couples.
Things to do in this area
Our two favorite restaurants were Trattoria Diva e Maceo (which had amazing Steak Florentine) and Osteria Acquacheta (where we had excellent pasta and wild boar). We enjoyed free wine tasting at Antico Collo (by the beautiful church outside of the walls) and purchased Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. We also found a wonderful surprise free self-tour at Citta' Sottorranea. It is on the main street and looks like a regular wine shop, but when you go inside you find that you can take yourself on an underground tour of ancient dwellings, their wine cellar, and a collections of weapons. Very fascinating!
