1bed/1bath apartment near Spanish Steps, Rome

The Pope on TV one morning when it rained so hard I couldn't go out., photo by SJ

When

May 2008, Four nights

Location

This apartment is midway between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo; and is at the top of its building, I believe fourth or fifth floor. There is an elevator, which starts at a mezzanine after you have climbed a couple of short flights of stairs.

There is no terrace, but huge windows with views over the rooftops all around. It was nice to look over other people's terraces and greenery! It was very private and quiet, and I only saw one other person in the common stair while I was there; it seems to be all residential in the building. I loved the area; it's easy to walk all over Rome from there, and of course the Metro stations are about five minutes walk each way.

Nearby Amenities

The owner has a fabulous information book in the apartment; and in it are very detailed instructions on where the stores are, and what you can buy in each one. I would never have found the grocery store otherwise! He also sends you a huge information package by email in advance with the same info. Lots of restaurants and coffee bars nearby.

The House/Apartment

The building looks to be 19th century, and is in good shape. The apartment is spotless. The double bed is up in a loft over the dining area, and the bathroom is up there too.

The ceilings up there are low; I'm 5'7" and bumped my head a few times, so you just have to remember!

The bathroom is quite small, but the shower is in a cabin so no wet floors. The washing machine is tucked behind the bathroom and you have to crouch down to get round there; I can't imagine how they got it all plumbed in, but it works! Kitchen is through a door under the stairs; and is a good size.

Garden

No outside area.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in good shape, and everything was extremely clean. I'm fussy, and it suited me fine. As there was only me, I had enough chairs; but for five or six people there is certainly enough seating.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed was comfy, but the pillows were very old. I told the owner, who had asked me for feedback; and he said he would definitely remedy that. Also, there weren't many towels, and they were a bit worn; but he said that would be dealt with too. Plenty of hot water.

Kitchen

The kitchen was great; very clean, even at the back of cupboards; and the fridge was spotless and NOT full of half-used food like I have found in other rentals! Full marks to the owner.

I cooked a few meals there, and it had every utensil, pot and dish that I needed. The kitchen has a frosted window opening onto the building's inner stairwell, but it has bars, so it's safe to leave open to vent cooking odors.

Problems or Bonuses

No surprises.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner is the most organised and professional person I have ever dealt with for a rental; and I can't say enough good things about him!! He was there when I arrived on the first day; came over quickly to deal with a minor problem I had one night; and also came over the night before I left to make sure everything was in order. He also booked my car to the station for me, which arrived promptly at 4:00 the next morning. My security deposit was refunded within three days of me checking out.

In 2008, I paid 100 per night; and I though it was a great price to be able to live in such a lovely place!

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would love to stay here again, and recommend it most highly to anyone who asks me about it. The website is very accurate, and the apartment looks exactly like the photos there, so no surprises! Thank you to the owner for running such a great rental, with such a professional touch!

Things to do in this area

I walked a lot all over the city; only took the Metro once when my feet were almost falling off on the fourth day! It's not far to walk to the Vatican over the river from P. del Popolo.
