Review 4595: Il Poggiolo, Fienile

Review by Mike from CA

3bed/2bath apartment near Montevarchi, Tuscany Chianti

May 15-21 2010, 6 days

Il Poggiolo feels like you are miles and miles away from everything (out in the Country) but you really are unsuspectingly close to everything you need (COOP, freeway access, Siena and surrounding tourist stops). This place rests upon a small hill (hence the name) and has wonderful 360 degree views of the valley and surrounding hills; it is just beautiful. We were able to easily visit Siena, the entire Chianti region (Radda, Greve), Luni (Roman ruins), Cortona and San Gimignano. All within an hour or less drive.

Nearby Amenities

The COOP in Levane has everything you need but I would not walk there, you will need a car... this is the country. Everything you could need is a very short drive (a mile or two) including a laundromat if you require a dryer.

The House/Apartment

The remodel of the Fienile (completed 2006) is incredible; and excellent combination of old meets new and it blends so nicely that you can appreciate the rustic ceilings & floors while not realizing you have a modern gourmet kitchen, dual-paned windows with screens and great insulation and lighting. The website will show you everything you need to know about the layout, which is perfect and talk about a "homey" feel... when you arrive, within minutes you feel 'at home'... it is so comfortable, peaceful and relaxing. There is an adjacent house where the Casa Colonica is located and the owners but you are never troubled by this whatsoever.

Wonderful sitting areas in front of the home or in the courtyard just outside the sun room. I can't say it enough, you're in the country but in an updated yet old farmhouse... the best of both worlds.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Immaculate in my mind. Very clean and comfortable; The Fienile is really for large families and can comfortably accommodate everyone. My party was three adults and two children (4 and 1 year-old) ... this place was like a castle, not your typical, crammed European rental.

Beds were wonderfully comfortable, not as good as home, but this is a rental and we were impressed. Bathrooms all remodeled nicely; there are no tubs but the showers are large, in my mind, compared to other European rentals.

There are too many 'good' things to say about the kitchen... to sum up, this is an American "Better Homes & Gardens" model kitchen.... lots of room to move around, all the plates and glass wear looked brand new, every utensil you could imagine and appliances up the wazoo (oven, five-burner stove, toaster, microwave, French press coffee maker, dishwasher, clothes washer, fridge/freezer, storage, too much to list).

Problems or Bonuses

All our surprises were good and we loved that Sara spoke great English and was very welcoming.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Sara and Allen are awesome (although Allen was still working when we were there so we didn't see him much). I booked a year early and Sara was so helpful and informative during the booking & paperwork process.... she even sent us a Christmas/Holiday card in December (boy, we couldn't wait to go).

Having her on site and speaking English was awesome. Sara is a tremendous asset for finding the best way to get somewhere or find good pizza or anything ... heck, we came back one day and she had caught a beetle for my four year-old who was loving all the bugs he was finding. The beetle was a special treat for his bug catcher. I can't say enough good things and would be so surprised if anyone ever had anything bad/negative to say about Il Poggilo.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would stay here again in a heartbeat. I did a ton of research and had some very specific items i needed when settling on a rental. My requirements were that this rental had to be kid friendly (as I mentioned my small children). We did not want a pool (there is no pool). I did not want to have to deal with bugs (there are screens on the windows) and there is a child gate atop the stairs (many Tuscan rentals don't have handrails on stairs). This place exceeded all expectations.
